How do people manage the sweltering heat wearing fall/spring clothing?

Asked by flo (13313points) July 16th, 2011

Next time you are in a public place (outdoors) notice the number of people not bothered by the heat. I’m referring to the non-religious people, and people ouside of work setting. Some people wear thick socks, sneakers, a light cardigan over a warm T-shirt, a in heat over 90 degrees and they don’t even notice it is warm. What is the secret? Is it in their genes? What is the medical explanation for it?

The very old often feel chilled even on the warmest days. I watched my mother over the past several years stay bundled up during the summer.

What you don’t know is what they are wearing underneath their clothes.

Also, remember, some people that take blood pressure medicene and blood thinners, are more likely to be cold on the warmest days.

My office is freezing so I have to wear more clothes in the office than the weather calls for, so when I go out to lunch or after work, I’m one of those over dressed people.

I usually wear cargo pants and boots, and sometimes a vest over my T-shirt. One great trick (aside from being awesome)? Wet a bandana and tie it on your head. Do the same with one on your neck. Having cool water near parts of your body with a lot of surface blood vessels really helps to cool you.

Otherwise, staying properly hydrated is a huge help.

@gailcalled these are not the very old these are any age but the very old.
@john65pennington I suspected that too. But do you know of anything that I can get to what wear underneath my clothes? That would save a save a lot of heat stroke victims, cost of air conditioning etc.
@chyna you are one of the lucky people, I can’t get over the sneakers and socks!, even if it is for the lunch time and back and forth for work.
@incendiary_dan that makes sense of course. But I’m curious about the secret (the science about it) of the people who don’t need to to any of these tricks. Is it in the genes?

@john65pennington and @incendiary_dan I think it is the word in the question “manage” is confusing since I’m referring to the ones for whom there is nothing to manage.

I must be one of those people too. I dress in a suit jacket for work and am not overheated in 90 or greater temps. No secret, no cooling mechanisms underneath. I am not one who sweats unless I raise my heart rate.
For me it is tied to being healthy and in decent physical condition.

How amazing is that! How lucky are you! So, what about in the winter then, if you live in winter snow region? How do you do in that weather?

Lack of or non-existence of skivvies!

blueiiznh's avatar

In the winter I will often go out the same way or even barefoot to the garage. No biggie.
I like jumping outta the hot tub and rolling in the snow also.
Maybe my blood is really anitfreeze/coolant?

I dunno, I am still sticking with being healthy.

If you always do something, you can build up a tolerance.

I sunburn soo easily, so often I wear clothes just to cover up. I’d rather be hot than burnt!

My ex used to wear his wool varsity jacket even in Summer. I never understood. But he explained that just like a cooler or thermos uses insulation to keep heat inside or out, so does the wool jacket work to keep heat out, leaving him at normal body temperature instead of much hotter.

From the hot tub to rollling in the snow may be physically healthy… not sure about mentally @blueiiznh :-) Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I am with @chyna on this one. I wear a cardigan sometimes in summer because the air con in my office can be freezing cold. Some people are dressing for the conditions in their office rather than the conditions at lunchtime when they venture outside. When they arrive in the morning and go home at night, the heat of the day is not there.

flo's avatar

@Bellatrix if I have to go out to lunch, from a cold building it is like walking into an oven, so, cardigan and sneakers or and as @incendiary_dan wrote boots can’t even be in the vicinity of for some of us.

Bellatrix's avatar

I live in a hot climate too but I tend to dress for where I am going to be spending most of my time. With a cardigan, I can remove it if I have to.

blueiiznh's avatar

@Bellatrix the hot tub to snow roll must be the Scandinavian side of me coming out

@blueiiznh I thought you were joking about the hot tub to snow roll, that is superhuman.
