Can you recommend some films?

Asked by stardust (10565points) July 18th, 2011

I’m looking for some film recommendations. I’m not a huge fan of the comedy genre, but I’m open to suggestions all the same. Some of my favourite movies include Requiem for a Dream, American Beauty, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, A Clockwork Orange, Frantic, etc. I’m aware of TasteKid and such sites, which can be great but I’m looking for films you’d care to recommend.

Thanks!

I’m a fan of the only two Guy Ritchie movies worth watching – Snatch and Lock Stock.

Yes, I’m a Chris Nolan fan, but I do believe, based on the titles you provided in the description, that you would enjoy these.

Fido (zombie comedy set in an alternate 1950’s America)
Trick r Treat (super intelligent dark comedy about Halloween)
Youth in Revolt (hilarious and quirky adaptation of C.D. Payne’s angsty epistolary novel)
The White Ribbon (subtle exploration of the roots of fascism in Germany, 1914)
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (funny and action packed story of a boy and the girl he loves)
Charlie Bartlett (Drug deals go awry in an uppity prep school)
Repo! The Genetic Opera (holy shit)

I’m aware you said you aren’t too fond of comedy, and that many of the movies on my list would be considered comedies, but you should give them a shot because they definitely don’t fall into the Jennifer Anniston-meets-a-cute-and-funny-secret-agent-and-hilarity-ensues trap that so many comedies seem to fall into these days.

You have fairly sophisticated tastes, so if you’re looking for a film recommendation, I have two for you:

1) Meet Joe Black is a very deliberately paced film. The production design is excellent. The script is well-acted by the principals. It’s a bit of a novel, etched on film, with depth and beauty.

2) Black Swan is a beautiful, thrilling movie that will blow you over if you like fine arts.

[Edit: Oh, I just thought of a third movie you might enjoy, based on your list. Wonder Boys is the on-screen adaptation of Michael Chabon’s hyperliterate novel. It’s delightful.]

I would also like to recommend two more Guy Ritchie films: Revolver (which is a decent psychological thriller), and RocknRolla (okay so it is a bit of a comedy, but I think it does comedy properly-ish).

And I see someone beat me to Chris Nolan films, I’ll throw Following into the mix as well but I find that really any Nolan film is good if not great.

@Neurotic_David You forgot girl on girl make out session when it comes to Black Swan. :)

Two I have watched recently with friends were The Rookie and Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Both were very entertaining, in very different ways.
The Rookie has Charlie Sheen as the new partner of Clint Eastwood, a grand theft auto detective seeking revenge for the murder of his old partner. We had a lot of fun watching it and thinking of all the “Winning” going through Charlie Sheen’s head.

(SPOILER: Also, Clint Eastwood is raped by a woman in this film.)

Kiss of the Spider Woman is about a convicted revolutionist (Raul Julia) in a jail cell with a homosexual who had sex with an underage boy (William Hurt). It’s difficult to describe the movie further without revealing too much, but it was . . . interesting.

I have seen 4 of the 5 movies you mentioned. I only like Frantic, and seriously hate the other three.
Keeping that in mind, the movies I would recommend (well regarded movies I hate) may I suggest:

Bad Lieutenant
There Will Be Blood
City of God
Chicago

This movie, I think is worth a look. I never thought I would shed tears seven times just watching one freakin movie! And one from Japan too!

( I ignored criticisms of the movie after a friend recommended it and was glad I saw it. )

I’ve chosen these movies because none of them are comedies, although there are some funny, ironic or odd situations in some of them. Some have interesting mysteries and odd twists. And a few that I just absolutely loved. Hopefully you will find something to your liking amongst this mix.

My First Mister

Ghost World

Truly, Madly, Deeply

Perfume

Dark Harbor (great mystery if you can get past Alan Rickman’s horrific American accent in the first few scenes which he ends up ditching very shortly)

Away from Her

Is Anybody There?

Snow Cake

The Girl in the Cafe

Waitress

Atonement

The Upside of Anger

Volver

Venus

Shopgirl

Belly is more ghetto than the things on your list, but it’s got similar intensity, and excellent cinematography. Many other great suggestions above.

The Elephant Man
The Prince of Tides
Mermaids

@Leanne1986 I loved the Elephant Man. I hadn’t thought about that in a long time. I may have to rent it and watch it again.

I’m surprised that you didn’t put Moonstruck on your list ; – )

Just a little background on me so you can gauge whether or not my taste aligns with yours!
I lean towards dramas too because I find there are so few good comedies. That said, I love offbeat comedies with quirky characters and black comedies.
I like movies that transport you to another time and place.
I like romances that are grand and poetic.
I like stories of chance encounters that change peoples’ lives.
I like stories of survival against all odds.
Some of my favorites:
Big NIght
Down by Law
Himalaya
Secret of Roan Inish
The Illusionist
Breaking the Waves
Tsotsi
Walkabout
Queen Margot
Erendira
Much Ado About Nothing (the Kenneth Branaugh, Denzel Washington one)
Matador
Brother Where Art Thou
The Station Agent
The English Patient
The Painted Veil
Room with a View
Oh well, that’s enough for now, isn’t it? Don’t want to be overwhelming. I’m sure I left so many good ones out though!

I just watched Jack Goes Boating, thought it was pretty good.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@Kardamom To be honest, I could just make a list of all of the Cher and Barbra Streisand movies but I thought people would call me bias!

I’ve recently seen three very cool movies that are off the beaten path:

I Saw the Devil: really brutal Korean revenge movie in the same vein as the Oldboy trilogy.

Elite Squad: One of the best action movies I’ve seen. I very realistic look at cops and dealers in Rio. Co-written by a guy who was a captain for 19 years of a spec ops team (hence Elite Squad).

A Somewhat Gentle Man: Swedish movie with Stellan Skarsgard as a tough ex-convict who is reluctant to harm anyone, but bad-ass when needed. Has a lot of funny stuff in it too.

Oh yeah, one more: Mystery Team: silly, raunchy, but really funny movie about kids that had a neighborhood detective agency when they were 7, but now they are 18 and have to solve a murder. Sounds cheesy, but it’s hilarious and disgusting.
