Isn't it sort of like telling a lie when we use the word free in this context?

Asked by josie (30934points) July 19th, 2011

Before folks get unsettled, the question is not, repeat NOT about birth control.
I saw this article today
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/19/birth-control-free-under-all-health-insurance_n_903732.html

When it happens, the medication will not be free.

It will be paid for by somebody, whether or not they are the ones taking it.

Why not tell the truth-Health Insurance providers will be forced by law to pass through the entire cost of the medication to the people who pay the premiums. Why be misleading about it?

You can bet, by the way, that BC pills will get more expensive the next day, since the manufacturers will have a rigged market.

Of course it’s a lie. Nothing in the health care industry is free. The pills will cost us all money. Over time which cost more? The pills? Thousands of kids in the foster care system?

“There is no such thing as a free lunch.”

Somewhere along the way, someone pays for it.

Ummmm.

If I go to the store and buy 1 jar of peanut butter, and there is a deal that says “buy 1 get 1 free!” then by your definition this is false advertising, because SOMEONE had to pay for the peanut butter—the store if it’s their deal, or the manufacturer if it’s theirs.

If @nikipedia hands one of the jars of peanut butter to me, saying: “Here rebbel, take it, I don’t want you to pay for it.”, than it is free peanut butter for me.
It was already paid for, that is true, but I don’t (have to) care about it.

Woohoo! Swallow those pills by the handful, ladies.

I don’t think it’s anything new. When I watch president’s make speeches about changing crap, I don’t actually believe they’re going to do all that they say. It’s just tacit knowledge that you have to lie and pander to get people to like you sometimes. Some people can’t handle the truth. I think some actor said that in a movie lol.

@Blackberry I think we’d remember to take them if try came in Pez dispensers. Then it’s fun!

@redfeather Whatever it takes to get more women to use them lol. I’m still waiting for the clinical trials of the male birth control.

No, it’s not like a lie. If something is “free”, it means it is being given at no cost to the person who gets it. It doesn’t mean that there is no cost anywhere to anyone, and I don’t imagine anyone thinking that is what would be meant.
