Do you get a discount for switching car insurance with a company you already have?

Asked by AshlynM (10684points) July 20th, 2011

Say you have State Farm in one state but need to switch car insurance to another state. You still want to stick with State Farm and since you already have insurance with them in the first place, do you get any sort of discount for that?

Depending on your claim history, I would contact a statefarm agent and let them know you are shopping for the best rate. You may have to raise your deductible but let them know you expect some sort of savings for being a return customer. Good luck

Yes, I moved to another insurance company and they offered me discount for that.

Some insurance companies will give you a discount for being a customer of theirs for a long time. Depending on where you are moving to, your rates may go up or down as well (just so you know). With each state having their own insurance requirements and some places costing more than other (due to crime rates or whatever else they use to determine rates), it’s hard to really say which way your premiums will go when you move.

I think State Farm has local agents. Your new local agent might make a deal to keep you on board.
On the other hand they might have agreements between State Farm agents not to take each other’s customers.
