Are you being conned by "fake cheese"?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) July 20th, 2011

I love pimento cheese sandwiches. I love real cheese to be in my purchased pimento cheese. Most store-bought pimeto cheese has real cheese in it. Others do not. Do you read ingredient labels? Next time you buy pimeto cheese, read the ingredients on the side of the box. If the first ingredient is not pasteurized american cheese, chances are you are buying “fake cheese”. Fake cheese is normally made with some type oil and fake cheese will not melt. I learned this lesson, when I attempted to make a grilled cheese sandwich.Question: have you ever bought pimento cheese and thought it was made with real cheese, but later discovered it was not?

I’ve never bought pimento cheese, but I’m very careful about cheese in restaurants. I loathe processed cheese – Cheese Whiz and those plastic-wrapped slices just gross me out. I never order a cheeseburger or grilled cheese from a restaurant because I know it’ll most likely be processed.

Pimento “cheese” is fake. The addition of mayo even Duke’s makes the pimento cheese fake.

What you are talking about is Pimento cheese that does not start out with cheese but “Cheese Food” or plastic wrapped cheese.

I had heard of it, but I wasn’t really sure what Pimento cheese was so I googled it.
It sounds good and if I ever buy or make it I will be sure to use real cheese, not the fake “plastic cheese” (as my kids call it).

I do not consider “american cheese” to be real cheese.

Mom loves the stuff and either makes her own or purchases it from a Mennonite store (as well as their liverwurst).

After sampling the UK’s wonderful cheeses, most of ours in the US taste fake.

I’ve been conned by fake cheese all my life…. tragically

I’ve never had pimento cheese though.

Not anymore. I always read ingredient labels. I like to know what I’m eating. It baffles my mind to know that there are people who, as adults, don’t read ingredient labels!

Not all pimento cheese is fake.

My dad has a store called “Market Street”, which I think is just an up scale HEB, near his home. He buys a smoked Gouda pimento cheese spread from the deli there that is absolutely fabulous.

I don’t know anything about pimento cheese but last week I bought some guacamole that turned out to be only 3% avocado. It tasted horrible, and nothing like guacamole.

That will teach me to read the label first.
