For those of you who are in the midst of it, how have you been coping with the heat wave?
Our household was shamefully lazy today. I don’t think we did anything productive. For the most part we lounged around and tried to stay cool. For the last week or so we’ve spent a lot of time swimming and trying to stay out of the sun and keeping hydrated as much as possible.
Has your routine changed at all as a result of the weather? What about those of you who live with children or elderly relatives?

Heat wave? I wish :P Good luck with that though.
@msbcd you’re welcome to have it! I’m so over it at this point. I just want to walk outside without feeling like I’m going to melt. lol.
We are staying in as much as we can. I must admit we keep the a/c turned down to a shamefully low temp for a variety of reasons. It’s blisteringly hot out there right now.
Our poor dogs don’t want to be out for more than a couple of minutes at a time. If one is waiting for the other to finish, that one flops down in the shade.
My son was out in the sprinkler late tonight. He wanted to go out & play all day, but even on the “shady” side of our house it was too sunny…also he doesn’t like to “feel the heat” in his nostrils ;)
@msbcd yes ma’am. Midwestern US.
I have been in Wisconsin this month and it has been tough for us Vikings! Today, we were at the Dells fabulous Noah´s Ark waterpark. Air conditioned hotel room tonight, but still can´t sleep.
It was 76 in Eugene Oregon.
We only have air conditioning in the master bedroom. My husband works 3rd shift so he gets the cool during the hottest part of the day when he sleeps in the afternoon. (except his workplace last night was over 110F. He’s miserable) Our thermostat in the living room read 93 yesterday. The real feel temp outside was 117F.
I deal with it by jumping in our bathwater temp pool and staying cool in the bedroom at bedtime. I also spent 2 hours shopping at Walmart today and an hour at Family Video. Ice cream and beer have been life savers.
Well, I was at the racetrack last weekend, and we had canopes to sit under inbetween races, fans going, and actually the fans were cooldraft fans, so we could turn on the cold water mist when it was really bad. While watching the race I used an umbrella to protect from the sun. At home I just stay inside most of the time, in the air conditioning. It has to be 95+ for me to complain, as long as I am not working outside. Packing up the trailer and car after the races was awful being so hot, but dealing with it when all I had to do was lounge around most of the time was not horrific.
It was colder than usual today.
Since coming to Nanjing, China, I can only attest to a handful of days when the temperature hasn’t been under 110 degrees! Being a Canadian, I do not enjoy this weather, but I’m toughing it out. I think you Americans can handle it too! I thought you were supposed to be a rugged, tough people? :P
We just pull the shades and don’t wear clothes. Drink lots of fluids. Eat cold food. And pray to the weather gods to let up, already.
I’ve been wearing little, drinking lots and staying in. Our poor little AC is struggling to stay at 79F and we have two fans going. We’ve pulled out the futon and slept in the living room for the past two nights. Today’s gonna be a scorcher, so I’m going to the grocery store as soon as it opens, then staying in for the rest of the day.
@Schroedes13 – I hear you. In 1998 I spent the month of August in Japan and it was sooooo hot and humid! I imagine that China is similar, at least in that it’s humid all the time, no? The Japanese actually carry around small towels (like facecloths) to wipe their sweat from their faces throughout the day.
@Seelix Ya it’s the same here. Umbrellas and tea towels everywhere!!!
I live on Cape Cod, so I’m never far from water!
I went to India for the next week and a half.
Actually, my AC is working really well. There’s awesome local produce here, so I put a watermelon in the fridge and some blackberries in the freezer. I ate the blackberries like popcorn and the watermelon was cool and refreshing. I also have a powerful ceiling fan in my bedroom. It’s like sleeping under a tornado.
Just staying inside till it starts cooling off.
There comes a point @NotDaloon when it’s too hot to even go swimming. I can handle a few days of it but this is unrelenting.
Well @NotVal, I know what you speak of…it’s like stepping out into a sauna here.
LOL! And then @NotAuggie it’ll rain a bit and instead of cooling things down, like it usually does, yeah. It turns in to a miserable sauna.
@NotDutchCat my grass is screaming with drought…and my well water is switched to a low flow alternative during a repair, so I must choose to water very wisely…mostly my son decides at about 8pm each night that he’ll water himself instead. LOL4RL
@IDon’tCareAboutSharkWeek I’m surprised that the city hasn’t put some sort of water conservation laws in place. We’re in the middle of a horrible drought. One time in Wichita they did that. If they caught you watering your lawn at the wrong time, or if the sprinkler wandered over the drive way or the curbs you got a ticket.
@WhoCaresAboutTheAwardsAnyway I’d just like to keep a few of my trees from dying. I never worry about lawn unless it looks like a fire hazard ;)
@FireHazard my husband has decided to obsess on the yard. Well, the front yard anyway. It looks pretty good. The back yard looks like you, though! Why do men do that? Anyway, look at this shite
