Any suggestions for taking a summer class?
I live in NYC. Saw some people painting in a small class in Central Park and I thought, “Hey, I ought to ask Flutheronians if they’ve any ideas.”
I’d prefer to not give a background as to what I am into because, well, I want to try something new. My only stipulation is that it be non-academic because I am deep in the throes of grad school.
Thank you :)

Woodworking. Build yourself your dream desk or entertainment center. Beds are easy so you could start with that.
@Yarnlady I’m with you! Grab a cam and start a good photography class!
Most of the big box hardware stores have classes each Saturday where you can learn to tile, do basic plumbing, sweat copper, etc. This is very practical knowledge to have and is pretty inexpensive.
Summer is half over but you could try Tai Chi. It’s a boring time to start to bird watch, sadly.
Good time for practical-skills courses. Crafting and smithing can be fun, home and car maintenance can be useful.
CPR always comes in handy.
Auto mechanics.
Stained glass art.
Electrical wiring.
Cooking.
@Jeruba those are pretty diverse classes!
Thought they pretty much covered the bases. Seems like whatever @JonnyCeltics is into, at least one of those is going to tie in.

If you enjoy other cultures, you might like teaching English as a second language. I do it as a volunteer. I had to take a free class to be assigned a student. If you like exploring other cultures, this might be a fit for you, and, considering your background, it certainly wouldn’t be too challenging.
Grad school can get people too deeply mired in just their area of study (I should know!) that it can be healthy to just break away… forget about “classes” (don’t you have enough of that already?!) and take on personal projects of discovery instead. E.g. I live upstate but if I were in NYC, I’d go about discovering the hidden sides to what seems most familiar about NYC by visiting and exploring the cemeteries, the wildlife and wetland areas by the shores in Brooklyn and making a video-docu of it just for fun. Or I’d take up something like urban rock-climbing or trapeze classes – something to get out of my head for a bit!
Dunno if this interests you at all, but I’d love to take a class on metalworking and learn how to weld. I’d also love to learn how to blow glass.
