Have you been affected by the diminishing number of book stores in your shopping centres?

Asked by Bellatrix (21317points) July 23rd, 2011

I just went to the shopping centre and one of the things on my list was buying a book. We used to have three book stores in that shopping centre but there is now only one that carries fairly limited stock. Since Borders and Angus and Robertson went into receivership here, the number of book sellers has reduced dramatically. I often buy online but I do like to go and mooch through a book store every now and then. Have you found this in your local shopping centre too or is there another type of shop that has pretty much disappeared that you miss?

I’ve had this problem.

Luckily, there are plenty of indie, standalone bookstores around here that are better anyway.

Fortunately, the local Barnes And Nobles is still up and running with plenty of patrons. I don’t think it’s going to go down any time soon (and I know for a fact that one reason that a lot of guys go there and buy stuff is because the girls at the customer service desk and registers are kinda cute, and a few are single).

I love online shopping but today’s experience brought home to me how little choice there now is. One book store in this area now dominates the market. I will have to go into the city to visit a larger book store. Bit sad really. There aren’t any indie book stores local to me unfortunately. Wish there were. I would rather shop in one of them.

Honestly, no. I try to buy all my books used, which means I buy them online.

Thank you @Aethefleaed. As do I. I don’t visit book stores nearly as often as I used to, but today was an eye opener in terms of how few book stores there are about. Sometimes I want to browse book shelves and find a novel to read, and I couldn’t. I will have to go and join up at the library (which would be no bad thing anyway!)

New books stores don’t appear that often but they do not close or disappear either. THough there’s a large number of resellers, especially for old books.

I really miss Borders. Ours closed nearly 2 years ago. We still have another chain bookshop in town, and there are a few shops selling discount or second hand books.

There’s booksellers large and small near me, so, no, not a problem to get a book if I want one.

I have noticed that some of the stores have closed. That’s a shame as I like to see what I am buying….I won’t miss the Starbucks coffee though.yuck

Yes, I really miss them. Especially the independent booksellers of my youth, which were each quirky and individual.

But I will even miss Borders.

I like to buy used books too, just like @Aethelflaed, but I am lucky to live near stores that sell a lot of used books. My kids and their mom used to like going to Borders, while I liked some local bookstores that have closed in the last few years.

The Borders was an “anchor” in a local shopping district, and without it I don’t go there anymore, nor do my kids. There is a large movie theater there that my kids preferred because it meant a movie and then go to Borders after. Now we go to an adjacent town that has both.

I am lucky to live near Oakland and Berkeley, California, where there are great independent book stores.

AGH. I just learned that the local Border’s is closing today. That’s the only bookstore we have in this immediate area. I’m crushed!

What’s sad is where I live, there are very few independent stores of any kind. This is the land of subdivisions and chain stores. Book stores aren’t as big a draw here as are games stores.

Yes, so many have closed…I order online a lot more…somehow, doesn’t have the same effect though…used to love to go in and spend hours looking through all the new books…
