Is age 20 too old to form a band?

Asked by QueenOfNowhere (1871points) July 24th, 2011

I want to form it when I’m in college. I will be in NYC… But will it be too late?

Negative. If you have a musical talent, then please do not let it go to waste.

I personally hope you are a good songwriter. Music lovers are desperate for new, really good songs today.

20 is a great age to begin your musical career. Hope to see your name in lights, one day.

Of course not! My dad is about to turn 47, and he has been in all sorts of different bands since he was a teenager. He just formed his current band about a year ago, and all the band members are of similar age. Even at this age, his band books paid gigs and private parties all the time. If they can can do it in their forties, I see no reason why 20 would be too old, especially in a place like NYC where clubs and bars are everywhere.

Negative.
My brother formed a band some one and a half years ago, together with some people whose average age is about forty years (he is thirty nine).
They rock.

Not at all.

20 is a great age to form a band. It’s actually a bit on the young side, though I mean that in a good way.

Totally. You’re way too old and over the hill to form a band at 20 years of age. ~

No. One thing to think about, though, is that you won’t get the benefit of “free gigs” from your connection to a High School, etc.

Most of the first gigs my bands got were connected to high schools, so you might have to go out and work a little more when getting gigs.

No. I’m 43 and may start another one. Musical desire pays no attention to age.

20. He’s too old, yes… too old to begin the training

QueenOfNowhere's avatar

@GladysMensch really? What if training is done but actually forming a band is left? what training?

Too late for what? To play music and have fun? If you aren’t bedridden and can play an instrument and love music, not sure what would be stopping you? Is there an age requirement to play in a band in your town? If so, I’ve never heard of that.

Axemusica's avatar

What? I’m sorry, but music knows no age limits.

QueenOfNowhere's avatar

@Kardamom Well usually (not all the time) bands start young and have young fans.. Like runaway girls, nsn and just many other bands you know. So that’s why I was wondering if 20 is late to start in those terms. but obviously its not too late to do music lol that’s not what i meant.

Kardamom's avatar

@QueenOfNowhere Why do you need to have young fans, or runaway girl fans? Wouldn’t it be better simply to have people who enjoy your music, no matter what their age is, appreciate your music? I guess, unless you are specifically trying to lure in young fans for ulterior motives, then the age of the fans and the age of the band shouldn’t matter. The music and the desire to make music should be the most important thing here. Maybe I’m just missing something.

Hopefully you are not thinking about getting into a band simply for the idea of being in a band with all of the supposed fame and/or notoriety it brings. I hope you would form a band because you love music and you can’t imagine your life without it. Otherwise, it would just seem like posing.

QueenOfNowhere's avatar

@Kardamom No I’m not. It’s because I feel like I was born to do this and I have a big passion. But you have to look at it business wise too. At least a tiny bit. Its not all about fun fun fun. I got my answer. 20 is not old to form a band. It was just an issue in my mind.

It really is never too late to start up a band, especially rock (though it’s definitely too late if your over 27, then you can never be a real rocknrolla because everyone knows that 27 is the age that every real rocknrolla dies, lol). I have fifty year old neighbors that threw together a garage band, and they really don’t sound bad at all, I think they have done the best cover of Knocking on Heaven’s Door that I’ve ever heard.

Gladys is quoting Yoda from a line in The Empire Strikes Back. Luke Skywalker wants Yoda to train him to become a Jedi, and Yoda tells Luke’s former teacher Obi-wan Kenobi that “He is too old. Yes, too old to begin the training”.

I’m 21 and I just started a lo-fi dream pop band a few weeks ago.

One of my art professors is in his 60’s and he has a garage folk band that plays at tons of venues all across the Southeast US. They are awesome.

Plenty of older people are in bands. There is nothing childish about wanting to start a band. The world always needs more music.

Being in a band isn’t just for your standard angsty teenager. If you want to make music, DO IT! I’m turning 20 this year and I just started a band.

It’s not about your age, it’s all about fun and expressing yourself.

No. 20 is the perfect age.
