What's a good sunscreen for children with very sensitive skin?

Asked by MRSHINYSHOES (14001points) July 25th, 2011

My two little daughters have very fair complexions. Because of this, they don’t go out in the sun during the summer because they burn easily. We’ve tried different sunscreens, but because of their tender sensitive skin, they react badly to them——skin irritation and inflammation. It seems the combination of sunscreen and sunlight triggers the reaction. Having such sensitive skin spoils our family outings every summer. Their mother has a fair complexion too, but she can take the regular sunscreen products. As for me, I have a naturally “tanned” complexion, but I still use sunscreen, and I don’t have any problems with it. Is there a sunscreen product out there for children that provides effective sun protection without the irritation?

Neutrogena Pure and Free Baby Sunblock is SPF 60, but is PABA free, fragrance free and hypoallergenic.

I 2nd @marinelife‘s suggestion. There are also natural products you might try. You can find them online or at a local natural health store. I saw some at the co-op today, but can’t remember brand names.

Have them wear big hats always when outside. It helps.

Aubrey Organics, Natural Sun, Sensitive Skin/Children Sunscreen
Earth’s Best, Sunblock, Mineral Based
Jason Natural, Sunblock, Mineral Natural Sunblock
Kiss My Face

Some suggestions. You can check out reviews and compare ingredients against the products you already know are a problem.

There are special clothes that have built in sunscreen. (swim wear and non-swim wear). My red-headed daughter covers up since she still can burn with sunscreen. Neutrogena has some great stuff. – Ultra Sheer Dry Touch is great. What sunscreen ingredients seem to be the trigger?

All great suggestions and I will give them a try. I find the ones with Avobenzone and Oxybenzone to be particularly irritating to their skin. I think they may be allergic to them.

@woodcutter Yes, they do wear big hats when they go outside in the summer——even long sleeves, and sometimes they end up crying because they don’t want to. Lol….sigh. :(
