Is it illegal to stop one from going to church?
I am currently living in a christian based homeless shelter. I have 3 children and I am in my 30’s. I had a disagreement with a staff member, that staff member quit her job to avoid having a sit down talk between the director and myself. I got on 2 wks restriction, because the director said she dont know the truth of what happened. So I am able to go out during the week, but have to be in an @ 9pm 1hr early for curfew and I am not to leave the premises on the weekends. I ask what time do I have to be in when returning to church on sunday and I was told by the director that I could not go to church. However, I was forced to go to a donors pool party this past friday. I am very confused and seeking help on his this a proper law suit? Is forcing me not to go to church illegal?

It sounds like grounds for an appeal to the shelter’s board of directors, but not a law suit.
Suing an organization that is helping you through what must be a very difficult time really smacks of ingratitude.
I respect you open, how ever this is a non-profit organization and there are many things that are wrong here and we deal with it. However, we do not complain to many people just among ourselves. Enough is enough! especially a place like this would expect to do what is right.
There is no one to answer to here. Its a take it or leave it thing :( so what your saying is that it is illegal?
Your question has only been up for 8 minutes. Be patient, more people will come to answer!
Obviously, I don’t know the whole story. If there is abuse or mistreatment of the residents, of course that should be addressed. I would guess though, that they have the right to make their own regulations and that refusing to let you attend church while on detention would not technically fall into the realm of “illegal”.

It is not necessarily illegal, but you have to determine whether rocking the boat is worth potentially losing your space. If so, I think you will have better luck taking the story to a sympathetic reporter than to court. Or take it to the church council if that church supports the homeless shelter.
My church supports a homeless shelter, if we found out they were refusing to let their tennants attend their church of choice, we would likely end the relationship.
I understand the rocking the boat thing, but right is right and wrong is wrong. Im just confused and trying to find the answer. Thats the thing I dont want sympathy. Yes! I have contacted my minister and she came by yesterday to chat w/me being that they didnt want me to attend church service. I didnt ask her this question though. Thanks Westriverrat there are so many good people supporting this place. I feel the same way they would not like it. Especially being that I am on restriction for a simple silly reason. Thanks
Pray at the shelter for one week or however long your restriction is. You don’t want to get kicked out.
thanks Marinelife!! I just dont like hyprocritze no one is perfect. We all fall short from our sins, however right is right and wrong is wrong. We all have a voice and have to speak up. Im just not one person to sit quiet and get walked on. I thought I could get legal advice on here :( I just wanted a downright honest yes or no answer. Thanks guys!!!!!
@DiamondNDaRuff you probably will get some great opinions of our legal scholars. Just be patient.
thats kool Westriverrat!! Im patient and on standby TTYL
Whenever you speak to someone about this, try phrasing it like this: “I want to know what’s possible.” Then ask your questions. If you get conflicting answers, you might want to write it down. But make no demands, and check your attitude to make sure they won’t pick up that you are upset. That can get you kicked quicker than you can say “Homeless!”
You have access to a computer. Stop talking about it face to face and start writing appeal emails to’m whoever is responsible for your issue.
Keep EVERYTHING in writing.
Did they tell you that you couldn’t go to church, or that you couldn’t leave the building? Not the same thing.
I suspect there’s more to this story than we’re getting here.
I wouldn’t think so, since technically, they aren’t stopping you from going to church; rather, they’re saying that leaving on weekends even for church is against their rules and will get you kicked out. I don’t think it’s much different from saying that someone has to work on Sunday, and if they decide to go to church instead, they don’t need to come in on Monday.
Perhaps because they’re a Christian organization, they have some sort of service going on anyway?
