Do you eat hot dogs, and would this billboard change your eating habits?

Asked by filmfann (52515points) July 27th, 2011

This billboard appears close to the Indianapolis Speedway, and depicts a cigarette pack full of hot dogs. The point is to alert car race fans of the cancer risks of a frankfurter.
Do you eat hot dogs? Would this ad change your eating habits? Do car race fans even read billboards? How effective will this be?

Do you eat hot dogs? Occasionally—certainly not one a day, not even one a week.

Would this ad change your eating habits? Not in the least.

Do car race fans even read billboards? LOL—nah, they’re in a hurry

How effective will this be? Not at all.

Frankly, it’s gone to the dogs.

Meats like hotdogs are preserved with nitrates. We have known for years that they cause health problems. No one should eat preserved meats every day, not just hot dogs. That’s just common sense.

I hate hot dogs, honestly. I think it’s such a good idea to combine cigarette and fast food as one and use it as a warning, both are hazardous anyway. I must admit that this could be bad for cigarette companies, if no one use cigarette there would be no taxes for government and that’s bad for economy.

Dang it, I missed National Hot Dog Day on July 23

Why are they picking on the yummy Hot Dog?
Do you think the Hot Dog vendors near the Speedway are happy?

“A hot dog a day could send you to an early grave,” says PCRM nutrition education director Susan Levin, M.S., R.D. “Processed meats like hot dogs can increase your risk for diabetes, heart disease, and various types of cancer. Like cigarettes, hot dogs should come with a warning label that helps racing fans and other consumers understand the health risk.”

Like anything, it is all about moderation and making good nutritional choices. Processed meats are not a smart choice.

Sensationalizing fears like this is not a responsible way to raise awareness to Cancer in my mind. I suppose there is an argument that if it helps one person make a smarter choice then it did it’s job.

Who on earth would eat a Hot dog a day? My father for one! I dig him on it always.

To answer you OP:
Yes, I eat one on occasion, but not as a meal choice. It was simply laying there on the grilled food platter with those soulful eyes.
The ad will not change my eating habits.
Do race car fans read billboards? Dunno, but if they had Danica Patrick doing something with the Hot Dog, it would sure grab better attention.
How effective? I am still stuck on the Danica Patrick image…........

I am no Joey Chestnut, but I do eat a fair portion of the hot dogs presented me.
I can’t imagine how people say they are less healthy than, say, a greasy hamburger.

At first glance, I thought the hot dogs, in the cigarette package, were cigars.

I am not a big hot dog fan. But, when I want one, I want one. This may occur about twice a month and sometimes not at all.

If a person started to analyze all the food we consume, we would not eat anything.

I will continue to eat my two hot dogs a month.

After all, our life is too short to not enjoy some of the benefits of living.

I will take my chances.

It’s a bad graphic. Like @john65pennington I thought it looked like a package of cigars and the words “hot dogs” are buried too far into the WARNING text. Unless it’s near a traffic light, most people driving by will miss the message.

This Q has spurred a desire for a big fat italian sausage with sauerkraut and spice mustard and a pickle spear running down the length of heaven. On my way to the hardware store to satisfy that temptation NOW!

If they ain’t got’em in heaven, I dohwannagoooo!

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

The billboard would not, but the article might if I ate meat regularly. I am not willing to give up the occasional Chicago Style Hot Dog.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies That sounds pretty darn good as well. At the hardware store though???

Oh yeah… Home Depot has those wonderful independently owned hot dog stands at the exit. Build your own designer Brat… they’ve got it all man, irresistible.

I asked the guy how many they sell each day. His comment: “I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you”. They sell a lot, and I’ve often considered opening a side business in that style. They sell themselves.

I enjoy a hot dog every once in a while, especially a Chicago style dog with mustard, onions, and celery salt. Having one every once in a while (like every 60 days) is not going to kill you if you otherwise eat healthy foods.

Smoking cigarettes or being around someone who smokes cigarettes will hurt your health, even if the exposure is minimal. If I saw that billboard my reaction would be “they got that wrong”.

When we want to eat hot dogs, we only eat this brand which has no nitrates/nitrites. I refuse to eat any processed meat.

EDIT: The ad had no play in my decision. I came to the conclusion that I had control over what I eat long ago. I doubt the ad will create changes at the Brickyard, or at any other raceway.

I eat a hot dog a few times a year and not because I don’t like them but because I don’t see them as “food”. To me they’re a junk food which is ok for times out at a flea market or amusement park but not if I’m hungry for one of regular meals.

Do I think these billboards will hinder hot do eating people to cut back or stop? No.

Everything gives you cancer. Sitting right here is gonna give me cancer.

If I’m going to die, I’m going to die deliciously.
(I prefer veggie dogs though)

I don’t eat meat and I certainly wouldn’t eat hot dogs even if I did eat meat. It’s full of poop meat, I mean everything is poop meat but especially hot dogs.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

poop meat? hahahahahahaha… well your lip gloss has whale sperm in it little missy…

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies I wear lip gloss much more rarely than you eat hot dogs. To me, it’s all about harm reduction. And don’t call me missy, trust me.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@cazzie – perhaps but it’s all about, again, how MUCH exposure.

blueiiznh's avatar

everything in moderation…..........

martianspringtime's avatar

I don’t as I don’t eat meat at all, but if I did I doubt that would have any effect on me whatsoever. I think it’s common knowledge that hot dogs – and a lot of other foods we eat – are health risks to some extent. Also I don’t think most people eat enough hot dogs to cause serious harm to themselves.
