Is there a way to turn off the "Questions for You" feature on fluther?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30960points) July 27th, 2011

I’m sure that some of you like it, and good for you. But it’s not for me, as I always proceed to browsing the categories on my own. It’s not that accurate either, well sometimes it is, but I’d still like to make my own decisions.

Now I am of the type of wack brain that doesn’t enjoy seeing extra things appear on my to-do list. Yes yes I know I should just ignore it… but there it is… cleared 30 JFY Q’s fifteen minutes ago and suddenly there are 30 more waiting for me. It makes me feel as though I’m not keeping up. Can it be turned off in any way? I never use it.

Take out all of your topics in your profile. I think that might help.

Got no topics in my profile. Never have. Perhaps if I put one obscure topic that no one ever talks about, that might work… how about spatulas! Nobody talks about spatulas right?

They do it to old farts, just to bump up the B/P.

Might be caused by passed answers !

Try always clicking the Not Interested button, if you aren’t already doing so.

Such maintenance… Clicking so many buttons, waiting to reload… Could be replaced by one button pressed one time click and done forever.

My guess is that part of it is caused by the almost 100 Jellies that are following you. There is no way to turn it off at this time. The quickest way is click on the “Not Interested” option when they come up. (Ah, I see that @PhiNotPi beat me to that recommendation.)

Yes, it is time-consuming, but so is walking for miles in the glaring heat in order to fetch a pail of water for for the family from community well. Another option is to just not click on the “Questions for You” function.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies It seems to me that the Remove All button removes those Q’s, but doesn’t tell the Flutherbot thing that you do not want to be sent similar questions. Only clicking the Not Interested button tells Fluther not to send you questions in the future.

@Pied_Pfeffer, Why would you get questions from people who are following you? I would think that you would only get Q’s from people that you are following, not vice versa. Unless it doesn’t work like that.

Then I want a “Not interested in ALL or ANYTHING” button. Or just a button to turn it all off period.

@PhiNotPi I would think so, too. I don’t know if it is a fact or not It was a guess based upon questions that pop up are from someone following me, but I am not yet following them. There are no tags on the question that are in my profile, and many of them I could not even begin to answer.

I don’t use the Questions For You. I’ve taken several breaks from this site, once due to not having internet for two months, and my questions for you reached 1000 (that’s the limit right now). I just leave it at that and don’t go there. It’s been at 1000 for at least 6 months now and it’s become very easy to ignore.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

That would be like 1000 little needles always poking at me @jonsblond

Just click the “Remove All” button on the “Recommended” file.

EDIT: I think if you do this often it will quit recommending questions for you, or will greatly decrease the volume. No, there is no “shut off” function.

Would anyone mind if some of my hacker friends reprogramed fluther to provide a button for turning off Just for Me questions? I’ll have them do it just for my account and leave everyone else alone.

I wish I could turn it off. It seems to me that absolutely every question that gets posted on here ends up in my questions for you. kinda annoying.

I banged out a greasemonkey script that does this. Here is the script. And here is what it does.

edit :: And if anyone wants it to wipe out Questions and activity you can change p:nth-child(1) to p:nth-child(odd). It looks like this.

^^ is a genius. As everyone has said, there is no way to turn it off on the site itself.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Does that work for Mac OSX @johnpowell?

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies :: Yes. If you use Firefox you need to install Greasemonkey first. If you use Chrome it will work without Greasemonkey. It doesn’t work in Safari.
