Do you know any good acoustic guitar soloists?

Asked by glenjamin (2505points) July 28th, 2011

I’m looking for some good acoustic guitar [instrumental] artists (no singing please). Mainly I’m looking for some mellow/relaxing/ambient music but any solo acoustic will do. Please send me your recommendations. Thanks in advance! -G

Are you looking for a live performance or just some pre-recorded background music?

If you are looking for a live performer, your geographical location would be helpful.

As for pre-recorded music, it’s hard to go wrong with classical for mellow/relaxing/ambient music and Andres Segovia has my vote as top of the heap.

I also like Ottmar Liebert. Saw him in a small historic theater in Union City NJ. It was so cool how he sat on stage playing barefoot! Lol,I mean with his hands, but in barefeet. JOHN jorgenson is great too if you like Gypsy Jazz he si one of the greats! He even played Django Reinhardt in a movie.I saw him perform live in NJ at a festival called Riverfest a few years ago. He jammed onstage with the cellist from a newgrass group called Crooked Still. Segovia, yes! He was the one who inspired my search for more guitar music. Strunz and Farah-I like them also. There are many more that I can’t think of right now. Of course most of these artists do with and without vocals. I would not pass them over based on that or you would be missing out on some really fabulous guitar playing!if you don’t have an aversion to bluegrass Doc Watson is a legend. I love his voice but he also does pieces without vocals. Jerry Garcia and David Grisman did some grae stuff too but mostly with vocals. I would add Govi.

@Earthgirl John Jorgenson is one of my favorite guitarists of all time. I’ve seen him live many, many times. I saw an entire show that was just the Gypsy Jazz stuff and he explained how he learned to play his guitar without using the two fingers that Django Reinhardt lost in an accident in the movie about him, so that it would be as authentic as possible.

I’ve also seen him perform with The Byrds (David Crosby, Roger McGuinn and the now deceased Gene Clark) which was one of the highlights of my entire concert going life.

And I’ve seen him play with his old band The Hellecasters, all 3 members of which are amazingly talented guitar players. One of my favorite songs that they do is called Hangin’ at Tom and Rita’s which is one of my favorite guitar songs of all times (and happens to be a very sexy, slow bluesy instrumental).

I’ve also seen him a bunch of times with The Desert Rose Band You can see him (he’s gorgeous) on the left. One of my favorite bands of all time!
