When thinking about an item (say toy), or food, a song or place that you visited from back when you were younger, which one brings you comfort?

Asked by Jude (32207points) July 28th, 2011

Just thinking about these Tomy Water games (from the late 70’s/early 80’s) make me happy.

I had an unholy amount of Star Wars toys when I was little, and every time I think about them I kind of get all nostalgic. Also, Nickelodeon recently started re-airing a lot of their classic shows from the 90’s, a lot of which I grew up with them. Seeing them makes me feel…feel really good, man. There’s a great sense of childlike wonder I get when I watch stuff like that, and I can’t really get my fix for it anywhere else.

My mom kept mine. My sons and my daughter have played with it. I still have the thing sitting in a box in my basement. My question. Why does the little worker have such a scowl on his face? lol

@jonsblond Aww.. I loved those. I didn’t have the Merry Go Round, though. I had this beauty. I loved that damned thing.

I loved that toy “Clackers” from the 1970s and early 1980s. Two hard acrylic balls strung on two cords connected by a metal ring. They came in different colors——green balls, purple balls, yellow balls, red balls, blue balls, etc., you name it. As a kid, I was mesmerized by this toy. It was novel back then, but it didn’t last too long on the market because it was deemed too dangerous, so they pulled it off the shelves. Kids were getting hurt when they got whacked by the hard balls.

@MRSHINYSHOES: I just saw those for sale at a fair in New Hampshire. Apparently they didn’t tell carny folk they’re dangerous. ;^)

For me it’s my stuffed animals. When I was a kid, I had a whole family of them who lived in my bed (which I imagined as an apartment building).

Teddy, Brownie, Hippie and the gang – I’ll always remember you. sniff

@cprevite Wow, really? I know they sell light, harmless plastic ones on small strings at dollar stores, but those you saw were the heavy hard acrylic balls on cords? I wish I had one again. I used to have one with blue balls, like in the pic.

I have an ultimate comfort food that’s so simple it seems silly.

When I was very little and growing up in the 60s, we had a little old lady who lived next door to us. (As a side note, her name—her first name—was Billy.) She was a very good cook of all kinds of things. She made chocolate cookies that melted in your mouth, and the recipe died with her.

Obviously, that’s not the thing that I still love to this day. It’s not her lemon cake either. Nor is it her lovingly prepared preserves.

It was the way she made plain buttered toast. She made sure the butter got all over the toast all the way to each edge, and then she sliced it into long, thin strips. When I’m feeling nostalgic to this day, I’ll put a lot of butter on my toast and slice it into strips. It soothes me.

@MRSHINYSHOES: Yup. Longer cord. Heavy balls slightly smaller than baseballs. Thick plastic ring in the middle of the cord.

My daughter almost knocked herself out trying to make them clack. Lol.

A few things, ticking clocks. My dad loved clocks so they were all around our house when I was a kid.

My teddy bear. I love him still. He is a bit battered now.

Flanny pyjamas… they are so warm and snuggly in winter. Like when you were a little person.

Hot chocolate. Makes me feel like a child. Drinking hot chocolate before bed.

Potato cakes. My dad used to make them for us.

Games: don’t break the ice, ants in the pants, operation, hi-ho cherrio, battleship, and gnip gnop (I especially loved those dice flippers that enclosed the dice wthin a plastic bubble that “popped”

Foods: baked macaroni and cheese from the cafeteria, Texas toast from the Bonanaza restaurant and root beer in real frosty mugs from A&W, and pizza from Shakey’s.

Songs: Little Black Rain Cloud from Winnie the Pooh, the dogs barking jingle bells, and “skating” from the Charlie Brown Christmas special.

Toy… my favorite stuffed puppy from when I was 4 or 5 and my old Raggedy Ann I got from my grandpa when I was 3.
Games… Chinese Checkers. I still love that game. It took me until I was 12 to beat my mom, but damn right, I finally did! I appreciate that she never let me win, so my win was well earned.
Foods… I associate moonpies, Yoohoo and Milk Duds with my dad. Other than that, burgundy cherry icecream takes me back.
Songs… I grew up in an extremely musical family, but the first that come to mind is the BeeGees. I still get jived from “You Should Be Dancin’”
TV Shows… The Love Boat, Batman, Superman, the Monkees, Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes
