Not to sound cold, but it won’t help at this point.

@Nullo That depends on what type of prayer and what you believe prayer is for
@Adirondackwannabe It’s very sad.

No.
I know a few guys who had arms, legs, penises, faces etc. blown off, plus I know a couple of people (one of my oldest friends) who are dying of incurable disease, who would gladly have traded places with poor old Jeret Peterson.
I think they would say something like “Hey Speedy, if you don’t like your little battle with depression and alcohol, then before you willfully cash in your own life, I will be glad to take it over.”
So, no. He was a weanie.

Whoa, there, @josie . I do get your point, but that’s a little harsh.. Suicidal depression ain’t no picnic, no matter how privileged you are.

@JilltheTooth
I like you, so no disrespect to you. Nor to others who are similarly afflicted.
But certain problems represent a serious departure from the normal expectation of life,or are mortally scary.
And others are a bother, and inconvenient, but at least you can talk to pretty girls in a bar, and look forward to seeing your kids grow up.
My answer stands.

@josie I truly hope you never have anyone close to you commit suicide. I have.

josie's avatar

@chyna
Me too.
But you just changed the subject.
The question was not have you had anybody close to you commit suicide.
The question was, will I join in a prayer for Speedy Peterson.
The answer is no. For the reasons given.

chyna's avatar

I didn’t change the subject. Because if you have ever had anyone close to you commit suicide, you will keep others in the same situation in your thoughts and prayers, not condemn them because they couldn’t cope.

josie's avatar

@chyna
They can’t cope, but others who are objectively worse off, can. Speedys’ problem was not his depression or his relationship with alcohol. His problem was being so into his own little world of pseudo-shit, that he could not put it into a bigger perspective. That is narcissism, not depression or alcoholism.

I am low on sympathy for people that kill themselves and I understand what @josie has said and am in agreement with it.
I have had two friends kill themselves and they left behind kids that really could have used a parent.
They squandered a gift and others have to suffer for it.

I will send a thought of sympathy to the family left behind who are left to try and make sense of this tragic ending to their loved one.

josie's avatar

@Cruiser
That is a different subject too.
It is common courtesy, and a reflection of human empathy, to express sympathy to the survivors.
The question was not do the survivors deserve our sympathy. Sure they do. They did nothing but wake up and hear the bad news.

@josie your question was in social and asked if I wanted to join you in prayer to a selfish a-hole who took their own life and I gave my answer that I would rather pass along kind thoughts to the survivors…where is the problem sir? I was the first relative to help my cousin cover the remains of my uncle who was fucking selfish enough to end his pain with a 45 knowing full well all that would find him were his 9 and 12 yr old sons. I will never forget the hug of terror those boys gave me when I walked into their blood and brain splattered living room! I hated my uncle for what he did to them and to me.

I wrote this question thinking about how we don’t have a good grasp on mental illness, not how it is right to die one way or another. This guy stood on the olympic podium as one of the best in the world at his craft. What kind of demons do you think were running around in his head for him to end it all?

SpatzieLover's avatar

The kind that made him feel empty and all alone. :(
