Why isn't Adobe Flash working properly on my computer?

Asked by augustlan (47745points) July 29th, 2011

In response to suggestions from my other question, I re-downloaded Adobe Flash last night. Now, certain websites keep telling me I need to download the latest version of Flash in order to view content. I’ve tried downloading it twice more, and have restarted both my browser and my computer. No luck. What have I done wrong?

The only thing I can suggest is the following:

1— Totally delete all traces of flash from the computer.
2— Delete all traces of any of flash’s friends, such as shockwave.
3— Restart the computer
4— Re-download flash and install it
5— Restart the computer.

Remember you can’t have any browsers open while you uninstall and install again.

Finally, if none of that works, I take a shot in the dark with suggesting a virus scan. However I would bet money thats probably a waste of time.

EDIT:

The older versions of adobe flash used to have problems with active x some times, not sure if that still happens. Probably not.

According to what I’ve been seeing, if you have Internet Explorer 64 bit (whatever that means) there is not a new, compatible version of Adobe Flash made for that. What I have had to do is go under “all programs” in my startup menu and select the regular Internet Explorer (not the one with 64 bits) and use that program. Up until about 3 weeks ago, I was using the one with 64 bits (whatever that means) and everything worked just fine. Not now.

Adobe also suggested to use alternate browsers (instead of Internet Explorer).

Is your Flash Player hardware acceleration enabled?

If it is, try unchecking the box.

Have you tried Flash in Google Chrome? Builds of Flash are built in to the browser,so you could always try downloading that and seeing if it works in there.

<hangs head in shame> I think that was my suggestion. :( Sorry it caused problems.

You’re not alone, I’ve had several people have issues with Flash lately. I think Adobe is just scrambling to make changes and is introducing some bugs along the way, but it’s hard to tell.

They’ve released 4 versions of the player in the last 30 days. Which is up quite a bit from the normal rate. (Source)

Hopefully they’ll get it worked out quickly.

I got it working again! It was because I’d disabled all of my extensions and plug-ins in FF (also due to the question I linked up there ^^), and had re-enabled on older version of the Flash one. Got the right one enabled now, and it’s working like a charm. Thanks, everyone!
