For those who hate going to a gym - what changes could they make that would make you join?

Asked by _zen_ (7857points) July 30th, 2011

The price too high?

There isn’t one close enough to you?

The esthetics?

I’d get rid of the meatheads that spend over 50% of their time walking around like they have a stick between their knees, their jaws jutted out, admiring themselves in the mirror, and sneering at each other. Bleah. I wish there was a “No Meatheads” zone that wasn’t so female centered (like Curves- I don’t mind Curves but not my thing) Gold’s Gym can have the overstuffed testosterone skin bags.

Lower the prices, install an indoor soccer field, add some more badass classes like kick boxing, and actually allowing the females to join in on the MMA classes. Pisses me off soooo bad that they won’t let women like me up in those classes. Grr.

Also, it’d be amazing if they would install the mini-televisions into the treadmills like they have at my university.

The price isn’t so bad, but they really try to get you with the enrollment fee. It’s stupid. If I’m going to pay $40 a month, why do I have to pay an extra $60 just to sign up?

The cost is first aspect. While others might involve more trainers who can help you around there.

I would only ever go to the gym for classes, and I haven’t found one with a comprehensive enough schedule. Running on treadmills or doing weights gets me so bored I’d rather be watching infomercials, seriously.

I work out at home, oftentimes in the buff,so until they can afford me that privacy,I’ll stay home. XD

Yes, I don’t hate going but I still forecast one small improvement, if they’re not too busy.
A naked aerobics class would certainly have me “standing to attention.”

Cost no more than £20 a month

Unisex changing facilities and showers with enclosed cubicles.

A buffet and salad bar might do it for me.

I actually found the perfect gym for my interests (and it is mostly older people, so the competition for machines isn’t too bad). The staff are polite, they have several indoor pools (two of which are therapy pools), nice changing facilities, private showers. It is the place where I went for physical therapy. They require they do a complete physical with blood work before you join and it costs nearly $1000/year. Needless to say I didn’t join.

Lower the cost, have it open 24hrs so I can go when there are less people, have classes, and not letting people who have no rowing experience use the ergos. It is painful to watch people on those things, they are doing more harm than good.

Curves sounds pretty good and it’s the kind of thing I’d go for. But there are all these beautiful woods and fields right in my neighborhood so I just go for walks out there. If there were something like curves that offered classes, I’d probably go.

Motorize all equipment and install an On/Off button.

For me to go to a gym, I’d need a small dimmed room that smells clean and has a wall of mirrors and a ballet bar.

Like @lucillelucillelucille, I like to workout at home in the buff with my hair tied up on top of my head. I don’t like dirtying up extra clothes and workout clothes feel gross on me when I sweat. I don’t like anybody watching me or worse, waiting on me to finish and get out of the way. For me to go to a gym, I’d need a small dimmed room that smells clean and has a wall of mirrors and a ballet bar.

I just don’t like gyms. They couldn’t pay me to go.

We belonged to a wonderful gym that had most of the features listed above, but the fee for a family membership was $200 a month, and we cut that one out when my son left home.

Nothing. I like to work out in the comfort of my own home, or go for a long hike in the woods. It’s free this way too.
