Could you be a politician?

Asked by _zen_ (7857points) July 31st, 2011

Everyone, now and then, thinks to themselves that they could do better than so and so (Mayor, Governor, President).

But are you thick-skinned enough?

Are you too honest?

Could you play the game?

How do you think you’d fair – and what office would you go for?

Yes, in a heartbeat.

I wouldn’t really aspire for any particular office. For me it would be all about the game.

No way. I’m too honest and I don’t care enough about politics. I’m not even the tiniest bit interested.

You could not bribe me with enough money to be one!! Yes you could…we need to talk!

I’m not very good at dishonesty. So, no.

I also have a conscience.

I would like to get into politics. It interests me but I don’t think I would be good at the game-playing. I would find the process of getting things done (and not managing to get things done) frustrating and soul destroying.

I would not waste my time being a politician, and I can’t see myself ever working for the US government.

No. I get too angry and depressed when I witness a significant amount of vicious, angry, dishonest behavior. It triggers my feelings of injustice in the world, and I don’t cope with that well.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Yes. No. Yes. As far as it took to accomplish my goals.

Seaofclouds's avatar

Nope, I’d piss too many people off with how blunt and to the point I can be at times.

I’d say what I think, which in turn would cause my almost-immediate assassination upon the full-blown commencement of my Senatorial campaign.

So, no.

ucme's avatar

No, because i’m faithful to the wife & i’m not a lying head of a dick!

All these generalizations about politicians are pissing me off. They are not all bad, and fluther should know better considering the wave of recent questions about generalizations put upon other groups such as Christians and Teachers, etc…

I could be a politician like Ron Paul.

I could not be a politician like Rod Blagojevich.

I’d be fine as a politician, and know what areas I am strong in and where I am not, so that in the negotiation of legislation I would represent my constituents well.

But given my history I could never be elected.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies I don’t think many people said they are all dishonest and corrupt. We said, or at least I said, it is hard to be around game playing, dishonesty, and total bullshit that goes on in politics today. I would be pretty sure it drives Ron Paul crazy to hear the mindless Republicans who just repeat what they are told to say. They are not all like that, but so so many. Congress and the senate wheel and deal, utilize the media cycle, the Executive branch too, to rile up their parties. The bullshit exists, and the stupidity, it’s hard to deny. It might be a small percentage, I truly believe most politicians want the best for the country, but a loud small percentage can really disrupt things, or make me miserable.

I thought about it. But I’ve worked on a campaign, and I know how hard those guys work. They go months without sleeping. They are always asking for money. They have to hang around a lot of sleazy types. I would not want to be a politician for all the silicon in the valley.

tranquilsea's avatar

In an ideal world I would want to be a politician but not the way politics are in the present tense. I’m too honest and double dealing bothers me to no end. I’m sure I would be kicked out of any political party fairly fast.

martianspringtime's avatar

Absolutely not. I don’t think I’m smart enough, wouldn’t want to be constantly in the spotlight, am already anxious enough living my lackluster life, and most importantly have a set of morals that I wouldn’t compromise to run with the businesspeople that run the country (in the U.S., that is).

One of my closest friends was elected City Councilman in a Bay Area city. He told the voters he wanted to slow down the rapid building going on in the city. When he was put in office, he began to do just that.
Now, a newspaper gets most of their money, not from newspaper purchases or subscriptions, but from advertising. The number one advertising moneymaker for any newspaper is car sales. The number two is home sales.
So, my friend began slowing down the newspapers 2nd greatest source of revenue. The result was the newspaper began printing lies about him, and not printing anything about the good things he was doing. They dogged him for 2 years, when he quit due to his fathers illness.
He has told me he never plans to run for office again.

Far too honest, and I have skeletons in my closet. I don’t know what they are, but I’m sure that someone would find some if I ran.

I’d love to be involved in politics, and think I could be pretty good at it, actually. Honestly is important to me, and that might be a bit of a problem, but I firmly believe it’s possible to be an honest politician. Not easy, but doable.

However, I’m not up for the soul-killing journey to get there and stay there. I’m pretty sure I’d never get elected, anyway, given my past.

Bellatrix's avatar

Auggie has a past that will stop her being a pollie… tell us more!!! :D

Hey, I was a teenager once!

Under 18 should be a sealed file in my opinion, just like the courts.
