What does it take to get banned or suspended from Fluther?
For those that have been suspended, could you share with some of us if you received a warning first, or just got a sentence?
I wonder why it doesn’t show on the profile of the jelly.

I was just wondering the same thing.
I’ve never been suspended, but I’m a mod, so I have an idea of what goes on.
Hate speech gets you banned, or suspended if you’re really apologetic or used the words in a context that doesn’t really warrant a true ass kicking.
People are typically warned several times for not meeting Fluther’s stringent writing requirements. Then suspended. If they come back and still cant rite relly gud or caplize there leters, then they are banned.
Spammers are almost invariably perma-banned on sight, but there are actually two kinds of spammers, and they are dealt with differently. Dedicated spammers are usually users from India, China, or Pakistan who run several profiles on the same IP address and simply spam up as many questions as they can. They also work in spam teams where one user will ask a spammy question, and another one will answer the question by plugging a site or product they are trying to sell. These types of spammers have their IP addresses carpet-bombed permanently. Mundane spammers, like a girl who posts “hay gaize, cum give me tumblr followrs and ill follow u! <3 <3” are usually warned.
If you are a belligerent asshole, you can be warned several times before being suspended or banned.
Any questions?
From all the banning/suspensions that weren’t spam or blatant trolling that I know of about all of them were the result of private messages.
Nope, that was the perfect amount of information.
Next time I know that I can be a ‘belligerent asshole’ to certain users that have clearly slipped through the cracks. Thanks for enabling. lol. I kid.
@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I’m also assuming that flaming and attacking someone will get one suspended, and banished if they it happens again. Or is that what you meant by hate speech? (I see hate speech as something like speaking against black people or gays or anything like that)
@Symbeline hate speech is throwing around slurs… anti-gay, racist stuff, extreme religion bashing (note the “extreme”). Stuff like that.
Personal attacks will get you in a pickle.
I’m wondering if a user has had multiple questions closed due to arguing/trollish behavior why the questions don’t remain on their profile grayed out. That way others looking at the profile could see that this user has a tendency.
or something like that
@Symbeline Yeah, but everyone would think he’s giving you a compliment. lol
@Adirondackwannabe :: For a bit I was a mod of the chatrooms and for some reason and was on their e-mail list when I shouldn’t have been since I really had nothing to do with the site outside of chat. The moderation for things that isn’t obvious like spam is incredibly tedious and goes through multiple people that agree with the decision. Every mod sees it. It would be very hard to grind-a-axe as a mod without others noticing.
@SpatzieLover I completely agree. Before today it hadn’t occurred to me that it might be a problem, but now it’s quite obvious.
@Symbeline I’m assuming you gave him back something to remember you by.
@johnpowell That was tongue in cheek. I’ve been a part to some mod work. It’s pretty amazing they put up with so much for free.
Someone told me they were suspended for “snarky” comments.
I wonder what snarky means.
Gross incompetence?
Douchebagginess of the highest order?
Displaying the symptoms of a complete head of a dick?
Not sharing gum in line?
Just don’t do this ==== >REDACTED !
You almost have to try. Being merely inflammatory won’t do it, though it might get you some warnings that, if ignored, could lead to a whack from the ban-hammer.
@wundayatta If that were true, I wouldn’t have lasted long here :D
There are many reasons one could be suspended or banned (basically, any type of guideline being broken can do it), but almost all of them are patterns of behavior, not just a one-time deal.
For pretty much everything besides super obvious trolling, spam, and blatant hate-speech, we give one or more warnings first (via PM). If the behavior doesn’t improve, we move on to a two week suspension. If they return, and the behavior still doesn’t improve, we move on to the ban.
@Adirondackwannabe Really? Your first thought is the people who donate time to the site and energy without reimbursement to make it a better place? So are you trying to score points as a rebel or do you really think that volunteers are peons for your abuse?
Nice.
I would assume, by the extreme lack of trolls and spam that this will get you banned.
@jerv It all depends on the definition I think. I’m just reporting what I was told. Maybe some snarky is more personal than other.
@bobbinhood Thanks. I wasn’t going to bother responding, but I’m honored you came to my defense. That was very nice.
I was suspended last Jan. for 2 weeks, til the first few days of Feb. for going off topic too much in General and, a bit of pissiness of which I honestly don’t even remember who & WHAT now! lol
I had a few warnings about the off topic-ness, and while I do not deny my culpability, truly, it was unintentional, a manifestation of my slightly ADD verbosity. haha
I have gotten better at double checking to see if I am in General before allowing my verbosity to flow. It’s been 6 months, so far, so good, but, one never knows.
If I disappear, well…you’ll all know why! ;-D
I had a question brought up by Coloma’s answer: What are the guidelines in Meta? I always look to see if a question is in general or social, but are the guidelines in meta closer to one or the other of the other categories? I’ll do some digging on my own as well.
@Adirondackwannabe I asked that question once before, but the answer wasn’t especially clear. lol.
@ANef_is_Enuf Yeah, there are guidelines in general or social but not meta.
Meta is generally moderated like the Social section. But if the asker of the question would rather get serious replies only, they can say so in the body of the question and we’ll mod it like the General section.
@NightStalker Apology accepted. That was a very honorable thing to do.
Using an extra account to self-lurve.
