Is it safe to put a lamplight on my Bonzai seeds?

Asked by dreamwolf (3163points) August 1st, 2011

I’m growing my new Bonzai seeds and hoping they will germinate within the next 20 days, will it be okay to put them under a lamplight for some warmth? I have the seeds on top of soil inside of a container. Thanks!

Bonsai seed care.

Banzai was the battle cry used by the Japanese military before a suicide charge during WW2.

It’s safe, as long as it doesn’t get too hot and you keep the bonsai seeds in a moist medium. I wouldn’t position the lamp too close to the planted seeds. You might want to get a self-timer to open and shut off the lamplight, so that it’s not on continuously, getting too hot for the seeds.

Instead of using a lamplight, why not put your planted seeds on top of your refrigerator, near the back of the fridge? My wife does that when she wants to germinate seeds. It’s warm on the top of your fridge and the warmth is constant. The seeds don’t need any light until they germinate. Once they germinate, you can move them to a window where it’s sunny.

Bottom heat is better if you can. The lamp will tend to dry out the surface, which is the last thing you want. Welcome to fluther.
