Best way to frame this sketch?

Asked by Jude (32204points) August 2nd, 2011

He is a portion of the sketch. You get a pretty good idea from this photo what the colors are. The background is a dark coral (?), there is white, black and grey.

I am thinking of a black frame. Now, if I had to mat it, what color would you go with? Or, should I go with a different colored frame?

Black frame,white mat.

I was thinking a neutral gray might work. Something very subtle. White mat.

I like black or a dark, espresso brown. Either a mat that matches the frame or a slight bit of white mat showing.

A golden frame?

I’m with @lucillelucillelucille simplicity is best with this kind of study

I think it depends on where you are hanging it and what decor it has to go with. Colours look very different up against coloured walls and specific lighting conditions.

I don´t think a bright white would look the best. I would think a light grey would look better. When you take it to a frame shop, you can put all possible colours up against it and see how it looks. I have a print in my living room that at first glance, looked like it would suit white, but when we took it in, the white looked absolutely garish and we went for an off white. You won´t know until you take the drawing in and put colours up against it.

@Jude Yes, like the ones you see around the Flemish Masters’ paintings.

How about eggshell let me rethink that be back mat and silver/chrome frame.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@rebbel I hadn’t even considered gold but I’m starting to like it. I think an antique gold frame would work.

everephebe's avatar

How about a eggshell, cold oatmeal, and cream (see left side) range mat think business card off white and a silver/chrome frame antiqued if you want.

I want @everephebe to marry me. Just sayin’.

Thanks, everyone.

@everephebe I am going to go with your idea. I found the perfect antique silver frame.

beige mat, mahogany frame.

Black frame, black mat with white interior trim edge like this. This will help the image pop. I think a white mat will water down the deep orange, etc.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Kayak8 The white edge: That’s what I was thinking

What do you think of this frame? (another photo). It’s an antique silver frame. With a cream colored mat.

Full sketch to be framed (NSFW).

SpatzieLover's avatar

Ahh I see…that’s not too silver. It could look nice if the mat isn’t too much lighter than the frame. In the case of this particular sketch and the colors used, I wouldn’t want eyes drawn to the frame.

Kayak8's avatar

I would stay with a very simple frame with clean lines for a sketch of the style you indicated for the reasons @SpatzieLover indicated. I am thinking of a frame like this. I would also include as much of the orange background as possible so that the figure is left of center as sketched rather than trying to center the image in the frame (it will be more interesting that way).

Thanks!

@Jude Put my antique gold frame alongside of the full sketch and the combination was hideous. Silver might work but don’t go with antique gold.

Kayak8's avatar

What did you end up doing and how did it look (pics please)?

Jude's avatar

@Kayak8 It’s still under my bed. I haven’t gotten to it, yet, but, when I do, I’ll post pics. :)
