Why is DailyKos.com so successful?

Asked by AreaOne (75points) May 2nd, 2008

DailyKos.com is an extremely successful political blog and my question is what makes it so successful? There are 50,000,000 political blogs out there (including mine) so what is it that sets DailyKos.com apart from everyone else?

Since the main stream media is owned by the GOP, and every news show is an informercial for Republicans, Daily Kos fills the void for the reality based community, independants, and intellectually curious folks, to get news, opinion, and diverse perspectives on daily events, without the mainstream media bias. An example of media bias can be found here http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/22/mccain-gets-history-of-th_n_114419.html This just happended last night.

There are 5 companies who’s subsidiaries own ALL network and cable networks—like GE, Time Warner, Sinclair Broad Casting, ClearChannel. Corporations are interested in power and money, and to be objective could cost them money. For example: GE own’s NBC (I think) and GE is also a defense contractor that makes hudge $$$$ from war—do you think GE wants the US out of Iraq?

How much air time does NBC give to the coverage of the Iraq war? The answer is 2%. Dead American’s coming home in boxes are bad for business if dead soldiers make the general population want to get out of Iraq.

That is why McCain is such a “media darling”. His 100yrs of war will be profitable for companies like GE, not to mention, war gets ratings.

By the way, I don’t say Kos is objective, they are not, they lean left. But I think that a patriot must consider all perspectives, not just the GOP talking points we hear on the Main stream media.

DailyKos fits a nice void where it takes itself somewhat seriously, but has some more interesting metrics on current politics (e.g. shift in favorable votes for a particular politication as compared to their party).

They also do their best to remain party-neutral. I say “do their best” because it is literally impossible to remain 100% neutral, but I’d say Kos is one of the more successful at remaining neutral and focusing on American issues and how they affect the broader world political landscape.
