Is it only around here, or is the Farmer's Market really expensive this year?
I love getting fresh, pesticide-free produce and poultry, so I look forward to the Farmer’s Market opening every year. This year, the prices are really high; almost triple what you pay in the regular grocery store.
I know a lot of our local producers were affected by flooding early in the year but there was a lot available – for a price. I was really disappointed that I couldn’t afford everything I wanted.
Is this happening everywhere? What could be driving up the costs? Price of fuel? Higher demand for organic foods (green movement)?

The farmer’s market is very expensive lately. Normally, I go there to buy my fresh blueberries and apples and peaches and corn and such, but the prices shot up! I have no idea why! It makes me mad. I want my cheap blueberries!
Fuel costs for the farmers are way up. Also fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides are all costing more, especially the ones made from petroleum base.
@blueberry_kid That blew me away. A little pint box of blueberries was $7. 1.5 lbs of cherries was $9! I’d like to support the locals, but I don’t have a Trump income.
Too much rain in places and none in others. It’s a tough Ag. year.

What you have enjoyed in the past is just that…..in the past.
I can’t see a break in anything for the future. I regret this for all the people and especialy my children and grandchildren.
You can guage Americas future by the number of Americans without a job.
Ours are way cheaper than the chain grocery stores.
The farm market by us is still less expensive than the grocery store.
The trick is to buy the items that are in season. Corn will be ready in a week or two. I can’t wait!
Where are you located? There’s been some challenging weather, really challenging in some regions, but the prices shouldn’t be that far out of whack.
Ours has been a little more expensive, because even though my area hasn’t been plagued with drought or much flooding, it just hasn’t been a great year for produce. My backyard tomatoes haven’t even done too well, and I’ve overheard the same things said by the farmers at the market.
You have some good years, you have some bad years. Hopefully it evens out in the long run.
I’m in the Rocky Mtn high plains region. We have had tremendous rainfall this year which is unusual. Severe flooding took out bridges, roadways and fields so I expected some price hikes, just not as high as it is. Our Farmer’s market consists mostly of the Hutterite colonies so we can usually get excellent organic breads, preserves and sauerkraut too but even those have gone up ($8 for a jar of kraut) and with these rates, it’s honestly cheaper to shop at the upscale gourmet market.
I think someone’s playing games with the prices. They shouldn’t be that high.
