What's your experience been in weaning yourself off Zoloft? Dosage must have been no larger than 50 mg/daily.

Did you have withdrawal issues? For how long and of what severity?

I stopped taking Zoloft cold turkey and don’t recall experiencing any withdrawal issues. My mother takes Zoloft and has missed a few days or abruptly stopped taking them for a while and she goes way down. Her emotional sensitivity heightens sometimes drastically, but this is from a woman who isn’t ready to discontinue using them. The most common withdrawal symptoms I’ve heard from a few friends are headache, insomnia, increased irritability and nervousness/paranoia, but it never seemed to be severe enough to affect their ability to function and it was seemingly mild enough for them to keep themselves distracted and focused away from the symptoms until it all passed. I’m not sure how long it lasted for them. Funny, while I was on medication, I experienced the crappy symptoms during use, not after.

I’m like @Vunessuh, just simply stopped taking it and no withdrawal symptoms popped up.

I quit paxil (a similar drug) cold turkey and I felt like I was being hit by lightning every minute or so. It was a terrible feeling. I know the recommendation is to dial down by a certain percentage every few days.

@Vunessuh when you stopped, did your depression come back at all or are you coping normally without them?

I’m the same as @Vunessah and @King_Pariah. Simply stopped. I was on 100mg.

It was a long time ago, but this is what I remember. I knew I didn’t belong on it and had to get off. I’d heard that stopping abruptly was bad and that you should taper off over a couple of months, but I didn’t have the patience for that and I didn’t feel like consulting the doctor. The whole thing was a mistake.

So I took what I had left, which might have been about three week’s supply, and divided it into two portions. Half of it was 3 weeks’ worth at ⅔ strength and half was 3 weeks’ worth at ⅓ strength. In six weeks I was off it without feeling any jolt.

A couple days of nausea.

I like @Jeruba‘s suggestion although it means using a pill splitter, which is hard to do accurately.

Were you all able to stay off it or any other SSRI, or did your symptoms of depression return?

For me, I never took another. This was about 25 years ago. I think I was misdiagnosed. There have been situational downturns since then, but nothing that made me seek medical intervention.

When I really did have a clinical depression, back in my early 20’s, they didn’t give me any meds at all. This was long before the Prozac generation. Therapy and time, that was it. I think the time was the main thing.

I was warned not to just quit. While I was taking them I was more depressed and suicidal. I’ve never been suicidal!
To answer your question, I quit cold turkey with no effects at all. Good luck!.

@ZEPHYRA I’m fine without them and have been for years.

For me, my symptoms were temporary, so no more after I quit. That’s been about eight years ago.
