[nsfV] Are there foods you can't bear to see or touch? (V=vegans, vegetarians)
Some people can’t bear to touch chicken skin or see fish with the heads on.
I understand that vegans and vegetarians might be repulsed by animal-derived foods of many types.
Are there foods that are commonly consumed where you live that you can’t bear to handle or even see? Why do you think that is?

Egg plant and don’t ask me why I am growing one in my garden either! XD
Tomatoes.
I don’t know why. I’ve always hated them. Something about the sight and smell and texture makes my stomach do flip-flops. I accidentally bit into one this weekend, it was on a piece of sandwich that I was eating, and I almost threw up in my kitchen sink.
@Adirondackwannabe I know. People love tomatoes. They just disgust me. I’ll eat things like ketchup or spaghetti sauce, but a hunk of raw tomato? You couldn’t pay me to eat it. Foul.
@Cruiser I’ll trade you for that eggplant you’re nurturing over there… ;)
@ANef_is_Enuf For me nothing says Summer better than a tomato right off the vine. I give some away and the people usually are asking how they’re doing in May. Although I’m with you on the eggplant.
@ANef_is_Enuf I will split it with you as I am thinking since I grew it myself I might actually like it!
I can’t tolerate seeing any sort of “dinner animal” with it’s head still on, like fish, pigs, etc… I also cant tolerate the smell, taste, texture or even the sight of brussel sprouts. /gag
Squash. Any kind of <gagging> squash. Zucchini, if very well hidden in something, might skate by, but that’s all. I am horrified that I have to share the planet with <shudders> squash.
Olives. I can’t get into them at all. The feel, the smell, and that taste…it’s all so horrifying..
I’m going to pretend that I wasn’t just eating olives.
@Joker94 We have olive bars if you’re ever in Upstate NY. I’ll take you to chow down.
The worst, most disgusting, most horrible smelling, most disgusting tasting, eye sore of a food is lutefisk. This food is best described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lutefisk I never in my life want to see, smell, taste, or even be around this disgusting mass that the people in Minnesota call “food”.
Okra…. shudder. That slime is like biting into a garden slug. Instant puke.
To my eye, there is a disturbing similarity between a chicken quarter/leg and the way a cat limb looks just before amputation.
The only time I’ve been repulsed by some kind of food (other than by taste) was once when I unwrapped a raw chicken, took it out of the tray and found three inches of trachea sticking out of the neck, which had been neatly tucked out of sight.
I went vegetarian for eight years after that.
Another one here for lutefisk. I also can’t stand the smell of a traditional meal my husband insists on making so I have to clean up after it and it makes me gag more than lutefisk and that is cod heads with cod liver and cod roe. Major stinky gag.
Oh @cazzie that sounds absolutely wretched!
Man. @Blackberry posted something in another thread about tilapia, and I was thinking that fish sounded really good for dinner today… but now I have no desire to eat fish for a long, long time.
For the life of me, I can’t think of anything.
I can’t stand the sight of sunny side up eggs. They give me the worst headaches. Don’t know why.
Also, sushi.
