@MeeblyConevily I have this great idea: how about you count them yourself?

Welcome to Fluther.

You can do some pretty simple back-of-the-envelope math to come up with a decent approximation. (And then you can check that conclusion with another simple method.)

Decide which beans you’re going to count, and in which size can. That obviously makes a difference!

Do some rough measuring of the size of the bean. For example, I use garbanzos frequently enough to guess that they’re approximately 3/8” diameter. Okay. Figure how many 3/8” circles can fit within the area of a can of the size you select, then how many 3/8” levels will fit into the height of that can. Do the multiplication, and you can arrive at a rough approximation of beans per can.

If you’re using smaller size beans, then you can count how many beans are in a tablespoon, then multiply that number times the number of tablespoons per can, and check / verify the number.

Ask them for a can of beans, next semester.
And for Windows 98.

Welcome.

Well, okay, let me offer you some help.
I hope you have a person scale.
If so, undress and hop on (you are, lets say 80kg) .
Now get off, take ten beans in your hand and hop back on (80. 0035kg).
Get off, take the can and hop on again (80. 675kg).
Throw the beans out of the can and weigh it (hop on with empty can).
Do the math.

@MeeblyConevily Figure the volume of the can from the dimensions and then you should be able to come close.

If anybody has a food scale, it should be easy to get a good approximation. Weigh the can of beans. Take the beans out of the can and weigh the empty can. Then take a fixed number of beans, including goop, and weigh that.

@CWOTUS I like your estimate because by determining the number of circles in a cross section you account for the spaces in between the beans.

Here’s a clue; buy a can, open the can, count the beans.

You got me hungry with this question and I didn’t have baked beans but I have red beans and counted them and there were 346….but you already knew this as your research is not to find out how many beans are in a can as a simple Google search would give you the same answers I found (320–350) You are really doing a Psych paper on how people respond to obviously inane tasks! How did I do??

If beans in a can were not mushy and gooey I would have counted them for you. I am curious as to what kind of homework does ask you to count beans in a can though

@Cruiser

I think you’re the winner on this one.

The OP stated that it was a college study. Just neglected to mention a study of WHAT ?

I think you hit the nail on the head :)
