Why do crabs walk sideways? Is it the only animal that doesn't walk forward?

Asked by edmartin101 (776points) May 2nd, 2008

I always wonder why crabs walk this way. Is it to defend itself from its enemies?

I think he was looking for instances of animals that cannot walk forward. Most animals can walk ways other than forward. My guess is that crabs (at least certain species of them) are the only animals prevented from walking forward but I’d like to see what comes up.

Someone call PETA.

Sidewinder snake moves diagonally, but I’m guessing they could move foreward if they had to. Honestly I can’t think of an evolutionary advantage to bring limited to only sideways motion. I can see how it is helpful in many circumstances, but I would think having the option to go foreward in addition to the sideways travel would seem to have the greatest advantage for survival. Then again I’m no expert, I’m sure I’m missing something important.

yeah, they are neat little buggers to watch (just don’t get too close)

On an aside comment, I’ve always been intrigued by them since they are the symbol associated with Cancer, my astrological sign. Any other crabs out there? PM me so we don’t mess up this thread…

When they get drunk, crabs walk straight.

@zaid yeah, My guess is that crabs can’t walk forward at all under any circumstances

@MrKnowItAll you made me crack up lol….. Have you tried getting one drunk? I bet it will be really funny to see one

@all: just read online that crabs walk sideways b/c that’s how their legs bend when they walk…....However, I remember seeing crabs walk backwards too when they are about to hide under the sand.
