What are some ways to slow down aging?

Asked by MRSHINYSHOES (14001points) August 3rd, 2011

Aging is an inevitable part of life. But how can we slow down the aging process? Are there real ways to make us age slower and maintain a youthful appearance as long as possible?

Keeping an open mind and not being mentally, psychologically and ideologically set in one’s ways? :-) No, really opening your mind, being willing to be open to learn new things and not let your brain and way of thinking become fossilized helps keep you young. If your brain old and curmugeonly your body only has to work so hard and no harder to keep up with it.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Yes, I sleep on my back. GA.

@lillycoyote I really am a kid sometimes.

Enjoy life, laugh a lot, get outside as much as you can, get plenty of sleep, eat right.

And practice yoga.

I’m just messin’ with you Mr. Shoes, Sir, but the mental side is a big part of it. @zenvelo has also mentioned. Learn something new every day, something, perhaps, that challenges not just your mind, your knowledge, but what you believe.

Travel at near-light speed.

Robert Heinlein would argue that a low-gravity environment (for the rest of your life) would help, the idea being that less gravity would mean less stress on the body’s systems. He would recommend retiring at that colony on Luna that we ought to have by 2011.

Maybe having a retrovirus activate the foxo gene in all your cells, to improve cell maintanance.
How about artificially regenerating your DNA’s telomeres?
Future nanotechnology may be able maintain your body indefinitely.
Go on a space trip at relativistic speeds.
Get an artificial body and transfer your consciousness into the machine.

Lots, and lots of natural anti-aging products, healthy diet, daily meditation, beauty sleep, and…cut down your laugh frequency (no kidding!) since it could contribute to the presence of wrinkle on your skin.

This article on old age appeared yesterday: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/43992058#.Tjq19XNFupc

Here’s the short version:

“Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University have found that many very old people — age 95 and older — could be poster children for bad health behavior with their smoking, drinking, poor diet, obesity and lack of exercise.”

But remember, this generation grew up with more physical activity connected to living rather than artificial trips to the gym and breathed and drank safer air and water.

Eat mostly nutrient dense foods. If your body is being properly fed, it can maintain itself better.

Relativistic travel only slows down your aging relative to the non-relativistic world. It does nothing for extending your personal lifespan.

Only thing I can think of is: If you smoke. Stop. Defo.

But the best advice I can see would be to try and live your life to the fullest now so you don’t mind it when you are old.

Here’s an interesting perspective.
