If you used to work out and stopped for a year, can you quickly get back to where you were?

Asked by jm5225 (253points) August 4th, 2011

I was just wondering if you worked out regularly and then stopped for a year and lost some of the muscle tone and shape you had, will you pick it up quickly again if you start working out again or is it like start fresh all over again?

Yes you will rebound to your old buff self very quickly…just don’t do the old weight amounts or you could injure yourself right at the get go!

Yes, assuming we are not talking about body building competitions. If you start working out again, you will see a big difference in just a few weeks. But, evennif you had never worked out ever, starting to workout you will see a differece in a few weeks.

@jm5225 Two thing lead to eh. Muscle tone and fat gain. Someone can lift weights every day and be very strong, but still have a lot of fat over the muscle, and not appear to be muscular. Some people believe muscle turns into fat when we get lazy. That is false. Muscle and fat are completely different tissues in our body.

You don’t want to start out at the level you left. You could injure yourself. Start gradually.

I was going to say that it depends on your age. But you’re young enough that it shouldn’t be a problem at all.
