Why would someone have a flower phobia?

Asked by gondwanalon (23232points) August 4th, 2011

A coworker is afraid of flowers. The bigger the flower the bigger her adverse reaction. She is not allergic. She calls them grotesque and can’t bear to even look at them. She has a hard time explaining why she feels this way so I don’t force the issue. In the past I remember her say negative things abut an Amaryllis that some one brought to work but I thought that she must be kiddng. Today I brought to work one of my flowering Econopsis cacti with flowers that look so beautiful Like this I bought it to work because the flowers are spectacular but only lasts for about 1 day. I thought I’d let as many people as possible enjoy it’s glorious flowers which they all did except one.

I’ve learned my lesson from this which is to leave flowers at home but I just keep wondering why would someone dislike flowers so much? She is first generation Chinese from Hong Kong so I wonder if this is some kind of Chinese superstition?

Assuming it isn’t because of a traumatic event, it’s really just because. There’s no real rationale to phobias, they are, by definition, irrational.

What @Aethelflaed stated. Shit just happens, but maybe they did have a traumatic event in a flower bed…..

I’ve no idea, but my oh my that flower is absolutely beautiful :-)

@Blackberry In traumatic events, it’s often not directly related. Like, it might be that growing up her uncle’s house always had flowers all around, and he’d also rape her when she came over, so now she associates flowers with being molested. Those kinds of indirect triggers are very common with trauma.

Maybe she really has trypophobia and it is manifesting itself as a fear of flowers?

Phobias are, by definition, irrational fears. People have phobias of all kinds of harmless things – there’s really no explaining it a lot of the time.

Flowers are basically plant vaginas, so there could be some weird sexual thing going on. It could just as easily be completely unrelated and totally random as others have said.

That’s really weird, but I suppose there’s a phobia for almost everything. Perhaps when she was young, she had a bad experience (or many bad experiences) with flowers.

No, it’s not a cultural/superstitious thing, for I am part Chinese, and I know the Chinese love flowers and horticulture in general. If you go to most Chinese homes, you will often find it decorated with plants and flowers.

I don’t know what her problem is, but that’s just weird. Maybe the form and fragrance of most flowers turn her off.

@gorillapaws “plant vaginas” too funny.

It’s a phobia. It is by definition irrational.
