Ethical question regarding a dog...help!

Asked by broncosgirl (712points) August 4th, 2011

I work at a animal hospital and took home a dog with a prolapsed penis. He was dumped at our hospital for a month and a half with this condition, and was finally legally the hospital’s property so I took him home and neutered him. The problem is the neutering did not resolve this problem. In fact, he will probably need a very expensive surgery to correct this. So I am faced with a huge financial dilemma regarding this dog. I want to do right for this dog, he is sweet and very young and deserves a good life. But I don’t think I can afford this surgery even though I took responsibility for him. I would feel foolish giving him up after all of this, but I just don’t know what to do. Advice? Criticism? I am sure there is some out there, I love animals like everyone but financially times are tough and even those in the field can’t always afford these things.

Since you work at an animal hospital, is there any way to talk the vet into pro bono work, but you’ll pay for the anesthesia, x-rays, etc? Or even see if the vet would do the surgery at a much reduced rate.

I think Chyna has a good idea. Explain your situation to some people. Someone in the hospital has to have heart.

That’s such a heart wrenching decision to have to make. You have my sympathy. There ARE organizations that will help with pet medical bills. There is a list of them here I would also ask at work about getting some kind of discount as @chyna suggested.

Perhaps you can spread the word out in your community, and animal lovers like you will make donations for the dog’s surgery. Take pics of the dog, and post them on FB or on posters, describe in detail his plight and suffering. Enlist the help of your local t.v. news to report the story (community news section). I’m sure you will be able to generate an outpouring of sympathy and monetary help from those wanting to help. I would.

I would put the dog on Facebook (have his own Facebook page) and get donations that way, maybe? Or even a blogger page…with a contributions thermometer and a PayPal button underneath. Be ethical and cut the page off when you receive the amount you need.

How much do you think you will need? Do you know? Another option…go to a VET SCHOOL and ask students to operate on him. Seriously. They are usually good because they are supervised. That’s another idea.

Put a call-out to your FB friends, email friends. I suspect you’re friends with some people who too care for animals deeply and you might find someone willing to help. My friends do this all the time and we all try to help.

When I first got Max, (a black lab) he weighed 19 lbs, had a broken leg, dislocated hip and 3 fractured ribs, I took him to the vet school and they fixed him for free, so the students would get experance. I recommend looking for a veterinarian school close to you. I had to travel 150 miles, but it was well worth it

@DrBill….....Listen to Dr Bill! :) Vet schools are fabulous.

Taking a pet to a vet school…...effin’ genius lol. I wonder who first thought of that one.

it was first thought of by the schools so their students could get real life experance

The vet hospital is a good option, I hadn’t thought of that. At this point I am letting him just be happy and have a home, and weighing all my options. Thanks for all of your advice, it’s nice to know there are lots of other animal lovers out there :)
