Why do the ants in my friend's house always swarm the stretchy rubber gecko his son has?

Asked by sunyata_rakshasa (350points) August 6th, 2011

My friend’s son has this toy gecko, you know the stretch rubber kind you get out of quarter machines at the mall. And the ants are always swarming it. I wanna know if their are mistaking it for a real geko, or if the texture or something is making them mistake if for food. Any one have some insight??

Probably mistaking it for food.

It probably smells like something they’d eat. Then again, they’re ants. They’d eat anything.

Some cheaper stretchy have flour inside them, so they probably think its food. If you want to get rid of the ants buy another and cover it in ant bait!!
