Anyone have experience with online dating - specifically FB dating?

How is it done?
Do you open a separate account – or let the whole world in to your private life on FB. Obviously, “private life” is an oxymoron.
Do you “like” people – do you join an FB dating service?
What’s the best way – and not that it should make any difference – but I am not in the US.
This is a question for a friend.

I don’t know that Facebook is intended for dating. Someone interested in online dating would probably be much better off signing up for an actual dating/matchmaking site. I know that if I got a random Facebook message from a guy asking if I were attached I’d be creeped out.
I hear you – but here it’s all the rage. I keep hearing about FB being the new way to date – you can learn so much about a person – pics and chat and video and stuff – plus their interests, friends, background etcetera… I just don’t know how it’s set up – and I’d like to hear from someone who has done it.
Oh, okay – well, if it’s popular where you are, then maybe it’s not a weird thing to do. I found this app by searching “dating” in the search bar at the top. A bunch of them came up – might be a place to start. For your friend.
My friend would like to hear from others. This conversation is not closed.
I’ve only done on-line dating through match and through OkCupid. I have no idea how popular those might be in your part of the world. I’ve never seen any FB dating.
Is Jdate very popular in Israel? I’ve known half a dozen Jewish girls that have met guys on Jdate.
I sort of had an online girlfriend once (nothing official, though). We didn’t meet through a service or social networking site, though. She would write stories, I would edit them. After a short while we began talking about other things in common, spending hours on e-mails, and chat clients, and Skype, and once I even called her – no mean feat, considering that she is in Germany, and I was in a local-calls-only college dorm.
I have almost exclusively met people for dating online, so I’d say I have a fair amount of experience in this department. I guess FB could be used for dating if you were willing to have a very open privacy level, meaning anyone can read your posts and whatnot. Otherwise, they would have a difficult time finding you or even knowing what you’re about.
Personally, you want a site like OkCupid (probably the best free dating site out there), plentyoffish.com is also free, but full of ‘not my kind of people’ (to put it diplomatically). Then, of course, you have Match.com and Chemistry. I was a charter member, in beta, of Chemistry, so I’ve had a free account there for years. It hasn’t worked out that well, though.. in all that time, I’ve only actually connected with 2 women in person. One was very nice, but not a great match. The other, not a great match, but we sure did have some awesome sexytimes there for a bit. (actually, that was seriously awesome)
One LTR (of 2½ years) came from Yahoo! Personals, but that is now defunct. I did meet and date one girl for a month off Match.
LTR means Long Term Relationship.
Cool. I thought I knew ‘em all.
