Is it the same as cross country skiing?

When you get it down with the right gear and clothes there is no cooler form of transportation. Do it at midnight under a full moon!

I never heard of it but I just googled it and it basically sounds like ordinary walking but with ski poles. It says it is good for runners with injury, but even after reading on several sites, I can’t quite understand how it takes pressure off knees or heels? Do you understand it? Is there a specific site that explains it well?

I reckon anything that gets folks out the door and puffing a bit has to be good for you, so if it strikes your fancy, I would say give it a go! Then report back and let us know what you think. I like the kite surfing idea better though! :-)

I see it all the time here. It is usually old people and people who are recovering from knee or hip surgery, but it’s getting more popular and has been recommended for pregnant women. The poles are different from ski poles. If you want, I can do a search or two in Norwegian if you want some Norwegian resources to google translate. It’s called stavgang here, if that helps at all. http://www.kk.no/314472/slik-gaar-du-med-staver

A friend of mine does this every day, and claims that it tones her better than just walking. She doesn’t know why it seems to help her knees, but posits that it may have something to do with the better balance she has by using the poles. She doesn’t really put her weight on them in any way, but thinks that the burden of balancing is somewhat removed from the knees… or something.

Well, as far as I know, the good thing about ski walking is that you train your whole body when you do it right. Arms, chest, core and legs of course. I don’t ski walk myself, but it was pretty popular for a period here in Norway.

Saw an elderly lady, well she probably wasn’t as old as I am but was a tad larger than I. Anyhow she was going at a pretty good clip along the strand with these poles. I assume they were skiwalking poles. She looked like she was skiing without skis!

Have you tried it yet Mr. Zen???
