You generally get more for answering than you do for asking. So don’t start planning your 10K party yet if you only ask and never answer.

wundayatta's avatar

Mostly by answering questions and having people appreciate your answers.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@johnpowell‘s answer is correct, if you only are inquiring about recognition (Lurve). If you are asking about how your total score (next to your name) increases, there are some technical processes in place that aren’t noted on the site, at least as far as I know.

For example, each individual member can only contribute up to 100 points to your total. For example, let’s say that I give you 20 great answer tic marks over time. Once I give you a 21st GA, it doesn’t contribute to your total score. You will still see the recognition, but that is it. Another example is that once you have five GAs to a specific response, any additional GAs do not contribute to your score, or so I’ve heard.

Aethelflaed's avatar

@Pied_Pfeffer So then say I have an answer that gets 14 GAs, but the first 5 people to click GA on it have already maxed themselves out on me. Does that mean I get no lurve for that answer, or that the first 5 people to click it that haven’t maxed out on me count?

Lurve hurts, lurve scars, lurve wounds and mars.

Any heart not tough, nor strong enough

To take a little pain, take a little pain

Lurve is like a cloud – holds a lot of rain.

Lurve hurts.

So don’t bother about it too much. Just ask, answer and be jelly.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Hey, @zen , you’ve got to hide your lurve away.

XOIIO's avatar

Or answering questions and going HEY LOOK AT ME! GIVE ME SOME LURVE!!!11!!!!!!1

_zen_'s avatar

Lurve is all you need, @dappled_leaves.

Cruiser's avatar

You friend older members like me and lurve the shit out of my answers and I return the favor. Easy as pie!

Lurva is gained best by brownnosing, and sucking up, oh, I mean being active. You can’t rely on people bestowing upon you unless you are going to very malleable and not make waves, especially anything with a less than positive liberal lean. If you actually want to be your own person, chime in on many threads because you get 5 lurve for each. And ask fluff questions so you can get awarded many lurve off that.

jonsblond's avatar

^^ listen to the man

Activity and fluff are your best friends.

_zen_'s avatar

That, and the King’s English.

Jellie's avatar

Hahahah @Hypocrisy_Central you talk so much truth!!

I, too, have noticed that generally acceptable answers will get you more lurve (which sort of makes sense) but I also lurve answers which show a genuine belief and good argument even if I disagree with them.

Also I notice a lot of people get lurve regardless of whether their answer is good or not.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@Aethelflaed If I understand how the GA points work, then yes, you are correct. Out of 14 GA, if the first five are given by people that have already maxed out in their contrubition, then no points will be added to your total score for the additional GAs. I haven’t seen this confirmed by a moderator.

If it is true, it doesn’t seem right. I understand setting a limit to the amount of total points one Jelly can give another. I don’t understand why a Jelly in the higher ranks should be penalized for giving a brilliant answer just because someone gives them a GA who has already maxed out.

MeeblyConevily's avatar

So if i answer peoples questions and people give me great answers (hint hint) i get loads of lurve

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

@MeeblyConevily No one will know if you give them a GQ or GA. The only additional points that are identifiable are the one from visiting the site every day, and possibly for when someone decides to follow you. If you want to increase your points, follow @wundayatta‘s advice and answer lots of questions with insightful answers. Also, be patient about increasing the score. It takes time, as well as effort.

wundayatta's avatar

@Pied_Pfeffer “It takes time, as well as effort.”

You said a mouthful there. The longer you go, the harder it is to get more. In fact, after a while, you get more lurve from questions than you do from answers.

FutureMemory's avatar

How do you get lurve?

By asking and answering questions on the site.

Answer a question helpfully and genuinely.

Then whisper something snarky below.

@Pied_Pfeffer No one will know if you give them a GQ or GA.

I have a funny relationship with the whole points and awards system here – which I have mellowed to in the last year or so – but what you wrote isn’t completely correct: though it is impossible in a thread to know who has given you lurve – if you have none -zero – you know the OP – and the Jelly above and below you didn’t give you lurve.

That, I find, is the most annoying.

If I ask a question – everyone gets lurve from me – just to say thanks for taking the time to write in my thread.

If I reply after someone, I may not go up and down the thread lurving everyone (though I do sometimes) I think it’s proper flutherquette to at least lurve the guy above you – sort of a ^5 for answering – and I try to read at least his post to get up to speed.

Lurve isn’t the most important thing here – but it is important to some people – especially n00bs who want to fit in. But it’s a sad day when a post remains lurveless. Worse than an abandoned question in Social.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Have you been following mine? Searching back I think I have the record for most consecutive lurveless post :-P

_zen_'s avatar

Well, I just lurved you to make a point – but I admit I have left you lurveless at times – but that’s because I hate what you write.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

@zen It is good to know you can at least be real and allude to lurve being as much, or more, a popularity contest than the actual skill or fact of the debate. ;-)

I knew there was a tangible reason it took 5 times longer getting to that mansion as the average Jelly. Not to say it was all you that did it..

_zen_'s avatar

I don’t know what an average jelly means – and only you could say 5 times more than – and mean it. You probabl even calculated it, took stats – and are ready to prove it, too.

You have asked hundreds of questions – maybe close to a thousand. Most of them about lurve and such.

The others, well, were less than stimulating.

When you post, it’s usally to kvetch about not being lurved.

Popularity contest? These are your words – and they have been repeated ad nauseum.

I didn’t intend to directly assault you – and I generally avoid you and your questions – but seriously, get over yourself already.

Fluther has been around for a long time. Some of us have been here for years. Others come and go – but no-one talks only about the actual points themselves – which I think defeats the purpose of a conversation or debate – as much as you.

You should go find a video game (sorry, I don’t know their names) and get all the awards and lurve like stuff there. I’m sure they have little conversation thingees – as even Youtube has a place for writing – if you fel it necessary.

This will be modded as a personal attack – I’m sure – but anyway…

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Attack? Can’t say I am impressed. Though I do follow you and respect you. And as with anyone, even those who hardly agree, I give props where it is due. I have asked an excess of 700 questions because I am not letting my destiny be decided by those who don’t like the question, get personal over the subject, thought it too hard to understand, etc. Many questions I would have asked you never seen, got lost in the peatmod, sunk never to be seen again. I have asked more questions on what questions you could actually ask without having it sink to the bottom of the peatmod never to be seen than about the lurve that comes off of it. If someone brings up lurve I will say what I think the real in the deal is. I would say about hald of my questions were fluff of no real meat or iron, just because I know it would not get modded. However, you do have your opinion as everyone else. I will sleep just as well either way. :-)

Again, thanks for proving a point I alway thought.

_zen_'s avatar

In excess of; though it too, is hard to understand (I think); Many questions that I might have asked – you have never seen (I’m guessing here); I have asked more questions on what questions you could actually ask without having it sink to the bottom of the peatmod never to be seen than about the lurve that comes off of it. (I give up on that one).

@Hypocrisy_Central I am still not sure English is your first language – it isn’t mine and I don’t really care – but your style, oy, and what you write – I swear half the time I don’t understand it. Maybe you are too intelligent for me and I just don’t grok you.

Blueroses's avatar

srsly, boys? You’re both special snowflakes, don’t fight.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Zen, I beg to differ. You have your own style of issuing GQ and GA marks. Mine differs from yours, and I suspect that others are different as well. When I read new questions, I often click on Follow and give it a GQ, then respond later in the day or even later. There are more times than not when I never give an answer. When an old question crops up because someone new responded, it might generate the desire to click on GA to old or new posts. I’ve clicked on GQ for old posts only to discover that it has already been awarded. There are just too many possibilities to cull it down to who is issuing a GQ or GA without making assumptions.

_zen_'s avatar

I don’t think you read what I wrote. I didn’t make an assumption. I didn’t talk about how others should give their lurve. I merely stated that if i have zero lurve – then the OP and the Jelly above me did not give me lurve – as I have ZERO. That’s all I said.

My system for giving lurve is simple – I have a fast loading PC now so I give it religiously – as I know it’s important to some. How you give it out is up to you.

wundayatta's avatar

@zen Who will you come back as next?

Wunday_zen, one day…
