Pregnant ladies, what do you know about donating your placenta for stem cell research and technology?
My daughter is pregnant for the first time and we have seen TV ads requesting placenta donation. Superficially it seems like a good idea, since at delivery it won’t be needed any longer!! Comments?

I’m not pregnant, nor have I ever been, but most of the women that I know that have had babies recently have opted to donate their placenta. There never seemed to be any to-do about it, so I’m guessing that’s all there is to it.
The blood in the placenta is a rich source of stem cells. Stem cells are being researched as possible treatments for several diseases such as diabetes, brain injury, reparing the damage to the heart after an MI, hearing loss arthrirtis… you name it someone some where thinks they can cure it stem cells. The potential for reducing human suffering is massive but this research is in it infacny and a lot more work will need to be done. This is where your daughter, grand daughter and the placenta come in. With out donations of placentas and stem cells it is very hard to do this type of work.
Placental stem cells are considerably less controversial than the embryonic ones.
@Nullo But, not equal, not yet. Although, from what I understand placenta stem cells are especially hopeful for blood related diseases.
I have seen commercials for cord blood banking, but not donating the placenta… Cord blood banking is such a great thing, but it’s very expensive.
