OK… I actually had this discussion today—and consider it really controversial. Do you feel sorry for someone who attempted suicide, but failed, and has to live as a quadriplegic?

@linguaphile do people know he tried to do it? Cause I have a quad friend who is actually pretty upbeat.

I mean there might be more shame involved if it is widely known.

@Imadethisupwithnoforethought Some people know how he became a quad, some don’t. He’s upbeat now, and has a girlfriend who loves him dearly. It’s all good.
My discussion today (off Fluther) was related to the suicide attempt component of his disability. People don’t appreciate suicide, but we certainly can’t say ‘tsk tsk’ to him for putting himself in a wheelchair, but we don’t pity him, but that’s a hell of a consequence, etc… (see the circle?)

Some people, sometimes, find narrowly escaping death, even when they’re the ones responsible for it, a remarkably effective way to make them damn glad they are still alive.

Always good to read a book on suicide before actually trying it. This seems to happen pretty frequently in suicide attempts.

@plethora Yes, I read an article in a magazine that went into great detail about how wrong things could and can go with various methods in failed suicide attempts. E.g., if you thought you were depressed and unhappy before, try shoving the barrel of a gun in your mouth to kill yourself and ending up only shooting half your face off and surviving. It kind of turned me off to the whole business once and for all, knowing the kind of screw up I am, it would be just my luck to mess the thing up, badly and royally.

@lillycoyote Same here. Once in a depressed moment, I ordered a book on suicide. Convincing.

I have 4 main reasons I will never attempt suicide. My Kid #1 and Kid #2, and a screaming fit my mom gave me when I mentioned suicide to her at 13 years of age.

The 4th reason is—I don’t want “suicide” to be the first thing (or the only thing) people remember about me. I noticed a while ago that no matter how full a person’s life was, or how amazing (or depressed) they were, if they kill themselves, whenever their name comes up, the first thing people think of is, “He/She killed her/himself.” I don’t want that.

@linguaphile I am usually a hardass on a lot of issues, but as a former sufferer of severe depression (and someone who used to want to be a psychotherapist), I would feel sorry for someone in that situation.

Yes @Facade. Perhaps the lawmakers are too intoxicated on ass vapor that they can’t make rational decisions about substances. Ass vapor is the most harmful intoxicant of all.
