Can Smart Meters cause interference to cell phones?

Asked by joelwilson46 (21points) August 12th, 2011

My cell phone beeps every morning at 2 am. This event has been going on for 6 months. The only thing that has changed is the installation of a smart electric meter. The phone can be off and will still beep at 2 am.

The phone is LG octane and it also beep on previous phone LG8350, with the battery in or with the battery removed. Last night we wrap the phone in foil and it was the first time that it had not beeped at 2 am. Recently the power company installed a smart electric meter which operates on same freq as cell phones.

@joelwilson46 Most likely then, if it’s a bother make a small faraday cage or even wrap the phone in tin foil and it wont get any signals, if it keeps going then its something else.

That shouldn’t be able to happen when the phone is turned off.
I am surprised to the point of doubting the noise is your phone.

we have now conducted several tests. The last one was to wrap the smart meter with foil.
The phone did not beep at 2 am when the smart meter was wrap . Verizon tech told me when the phone was off there was still power in the circuit, the only way to discharge would be to take the battery out and hold down on the power button for 30 sec. The beep sound is coming from the phone, more than one person has heard it. I honestly believe now that the smart meter is the cause, since it operates on the cell phone freq.
