What are some good, economical (meaning relatively cheap) sodium laureth sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners?

Asked by jca (36062points) August 12th, 2011

A friend of mine gets keratin treatments for her hair. She said the hairdressers recommend sodium laureth sulfate-free shampoos and conditoners, to maintain the life of the treatments. From what I understand, hairdressers like to push professional products, but now more “over the counter” brands are jumping on the SLS-free bandwagon.

SLS is the ingredient that makes the shampoo lather a lot, which is why it is added in the first place.

Do you know of any good “over the counter” shampoos and conditioners that are SLS-free?

Here are lots of choices. I have no idea which might be OTC.

The one I know of is Loreal. I found it in my supermarket and drug store. My mom and a girlfriend of mine love it. I was luke warm about it, I switched back to a different shampoo.

I use (low cost) Pert Plus dandruff shampoo, which uses ammonium lauryl sulfate. Works great. We have no shampoos in our house with SLS because my kids have skin as sensitive as mine.

Suave is as good as any of them. And, the price is right at Dollar General Stores.

I use homemade soap (not the overly-processed stuff) to wash my hair. Most conditioner doesn’t foam anyway.

Don’t like laureth? [snif] ;)

I’d have been disappointed if @laureth hadn’t answered this.

The Loreal one is pretty good. It’s not fantastic, but it’s good. You can get it at Target, Safeway, where ever.

I recommend the “No-Poo” method. You make two solutions, one of baking soda and water, and the other of apple cider vinegar and water. You rinse with the first, then the second. It takes a bit of an adjustment period for your hair to be really smooth, but it’s less than a week.

Castle soap is very good for shampoo. It’s diluted to make the shampoo, so you save money. and you can also add olive oil and other things to it to cater to your needs. As far as cheap conditioner is concerned, I suggest Suave’s regular conditioner. I normally buy the coconut scent.

Doesn’t Suave have sodium laureth sulfate?

I read an ad that said Kirkland (Costco’s brand) makes one. I have to check it out next time I’m there.

I use the Yes to Carrots one. I love that stuff.
