Can you direct me to girl/women rock and/or pop bands?

Asked by rebbel (35553points) August 12th, 2011

I very much like bands like Heart and Birtha.
Bands that are formed by all women or mainly women, in any case that provide a female sound (and whose songs are sung by female voice(s)).
Do you know of one, or more, of such (rock or pop) bands?
Can be from the 60’s until the 10’s.

Hope there won’t come a BIG list from @Kardamom to add to all the bands you already gave me.
Well, actually I do hope it!

@rebbel I only listed the ones that I actually like. Ooops, I did forget to mention Morcheeba!

lillycoyote's avatar

@Kardamom I have some issues with your list, it’s obviously and can’t be complete exhaustive but Debbie Gibson makes your list but not Bonnie Raitt? What’s up with that?

Listen to this live version of Love Me Like a Man and tell me she doesn’t rock and play a damn good guitar.

quiddidyquestions's avatar

Tegan and Sara, ya’ll.

jaytkay's avatar

@Kardamom You forgot Blondie!!

tom_g's avatar

Kinda cheating, but Kim Gordon kicks ass and provides lead vocals on many of Sonic Youth’s songs.

tom_g's avatar

Also, probably cheating, but Massive Attack’s Teardrop is an amazing song. Elizabeth Fraser from the Cocteau Twins provides vocals.

jca's avatar

Linda Ronstadt from the 70’s.

Stevie Nicks

Romeo Void

jca's avatar

The girl who sang 99 Red Balloons (1980’s). I forgot her name.

Kardamom's avatar

@lillycoyote I am embarrassed to admit that I actually like Debbie Gibson’s song Only In My Dreams

I don’t dislike Bonnie Raitt, her voice is just kind of boring to me, kind of like Melissa Ethridge’s voice, although I do acknowledge that Bonnie is fantastic guitar player.

@jaytkay How could I forget Blondie!? D’ooooh!

Incoherency_'s avatar

Believe me now or sexually objectify me later, but here are some that Kardamom didn’t list (º0º):

Vixen.
The Belle Stars.
4 Non Blondes.
Pink.
Luscious Jackson.

@tranquilsea

Yay for The Corrs!
We saw them 3 times on their 2004 tour. Unfortunately Caro didn’t tour with them, so I’m up for seeing them again if Caro joins them.

lillycoyote's avatar

@Kardamom Don’t be embarrassed about Debbie Gibson, and I apologize. I should have just posted my recommendations without reference to your list. After all, the question is seeking personal recommendations, not personal recommendations that would then be reviewed and approved by lillycoyote.:-) It’s just that the list was so long and a lot of my favorite women weren’t on it, though a lot of them are. Sorry

Holy fuck! 35 answers, and no one has mentioned the Go-gos?
Also, the 5,6,7 8’s. They were the Japanese group in Kill Bill.

I love the singers who participate in the Lilith Fair—all women—my favorite’s Sarah MacLachlan.

Tracy Chapman hasn’t been mentioned yet.

tom_g's avatar

B-52s, of course.

And if you want to get your country/rock/folk/crossover on a little bit there are or were:

The Dixie Chicks

Alison Krauss & Union Station

Iris Dement1

Iris Dement 2

Shaw Colvin 1

Shawn Colvin 2

Shawn Colvin 3 (for the Brandi Carlie fans)

Mary Chapin Carpenter

Emmylou Harris 1

Emmylou Harris 2

Emmylou Harris 3 (for the Sarah MacLachlan fans)

And just for fun:

And who could forget The GTOs, circa 1969! What they lacked in talent they more than made up for in their groupie skill set, I’m sure.

Okay, I’ve probably made my point.

Also, Feist.
Jenny Lewis.
Rilo Kiley.
The Watson Twins.

Another vote for The Donnas. They may be the only band in the world where I like every single one of their songs (even all the non-single ones on the albums). And they have killer covers of Safety Dance and Kids in America, which I don’t think are on any of their albums.

And the rest are almost all great suggestions. Many jellies have amazing taste in music.

Kardamom's avatar

@lillycoyote I knew you were just teasin’ me. Aren’t you glad I didn’t list Tiffany? LOL.

There’s a new bluegrass band named Dehlia Low. If you like bluegrass…..

Canada puts out a Women and Songs compilation CD nearly every year. It is an awesome way to pick up on new talent.

jca's avatar

I had a double CD by Reader’s Digest (it was free at a Vagina Monologues event) and it was very good – I googled it because I wanted to buy it as a gift for a friend and I don’t think they make it any more.

Did anybody say “the Carpenters?”

tranquilsea's avatar

Sarah Harmer’s Don’t Get Your Back Up and Open Window and Basement Apartment. She has a beautiful voice.

Sarah Slean’s Mary and Sweet Ones

Natalie Merchant’s Carnaval and Kind and Generous

Six Pence None The Richer’s Kiss Me

India.Arie’s Video

Diana Krall’s Charmed Life and Cry Me A River. Jazz. She has a rich voice.

Jully Black’s I Travelled

Theresa Sokyrka, I Turned

A Fine Frenzy, Almost Lover A young artist with an amazing voice.

Colbie Caillat, Bubbly

Joni Mitchell, Twisted and Both Sides Now

And, of course, Carol King and iconic singer and songwriter, Tapestry and Smackwater Jack. She has so many great songs…too many to list here.

Natasha Bedingfield. (did I totally screw up that spelling?)
