What cheers you up when you're blue?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37734points) August 13th, 2011

I’ve been down in the dumps lately and have used reading and listening to music to cheer myself up.

How do you raise your spirits when you’re low?

Reading is a good cure for when I feel like that. Movies also help a lot.

Interacting with friends.

I talk with my close friends, watch some TV (watching Whose Line is it Anyway now :D), read thought provoking books, do artwork (just finished silk painting projects) and commune with nature. Nowadays, I Fluther :D

I sleep or watch an episode of Parks and Recreation or call the friend I know can make me immediately laugh.

I have a few different cd cases of movies/tv that cheer me up (10th Kingdom, Ice Age, The Incredibles, Wizard of Oz, various screwball comedies, Marx Brothers, Friends). Maybe something with a thicker plot, more in the drama or sci-fi area of things if I’m really looking more for a great distraction because it’s not so much that I’m chronically bummed out as that this one ass said something earlier that day that I can’t seem to shake. Read Harry Potter (especially 1 and 3). Watch some stand-up comedy.

Last time I was needing a break I walked to the store for beer and decided to keep walking. I did stop for beer and sat on that hill after climbing it.

My cats, thrift stores sometimes (the thrill of getting shoes for three dollars!), listening to the New York Dolls, getting something done (cleaning, sewing, etc).

First of all….((((((((((((((hug for Hawaii Jake ))))))))))))))))))))) hope you are better

Things I do:

1.I call a friend.
2.I take a shower, wash my hair, make some chai and get into bed with a really good book.
3.I play “Gipsy Kings” (and or some salsa music) and I dance the blues out of my body.
4.I watch a funny/silly/happy movie…Doris Day…Woody Allen…Marx Brothers…or a romantic comedy….or re-runs of “I Love Lucy” and/or “Curb Your Enthusiasm” or “Seinfeld.”
5. I take my shaman’s drum out into the garden and drum.
6. I take a walk in nature.
7. I go book shopping.
8. I listen to Jimmy Durante sing, “Make Someone Happy” and Judy Garland “Get Happy” and Izzy’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
9. I listen to music sent to me from NH. Usually exquisite stuff.
10. I put on the theme from “Mame” and sing-along.

If none of the above work….I will just have one huge, boo-hoo/big/boisterous cryfest. That usually clears the air.

I go for a run or a walk with my dog. She is the best listener and company! Plus she takes such joy in the most mundane daily occurrences, I just can’t help but smile.

I think you should get yourself a dog Jakie!

Hope you feel better soon. PM me if you need a sympathetic ear.

A beautiful rest, nutritious food, stroking my cats, and classical music. The day I receive my salary is the day I’m immune to any kind of stress, a perfect time for shopping!

I have a couple of people I call, then I either A: Watch silly movies or TVand/or read light-hearted stuff (Bill Bryson is always a good choice) or B: Really wallow in it, sad movies etc and try to work my way out the other side. Sometimes I just need to cry it all out.

Thanks, everybody. There are some excellent suggestions here. I’ve had a good night’s sleep and that’s done wonders, too.

I’ve got me a sicky going on today, I have to miss a really cool thing, and @KatawaGrey is coming over later to hang with me. That will definitely cheer me up!

Receiving a good blowjob can do wonders for the psyche.

and before you all cringe at the statement, admit it, a lot of you know it’s true.

Sunshine. Spending a little time in one of the few green areas in the middle of this huge city. I take a little walk over to my campus or the park and find somewhere to sit where I can smell the green, sit in the sunshine and close my eyes. It helps.

-Go for a ride or walk with my dogs is an instant pick up because they are fun to be with.
-Chocolate cake, chocolate chip cookies, Hershey’s Kisses (I know, I know…)
-Organizing my makeup collection takes my mind away from things.
-Pink roses, tulips or some other pretty flower.

laineybug's avatar

Music, reading, and eating a small amount of chocolate.
@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard at first I thought you typed shooting friends.

Going to the shooting range. The people, the guns, and all of the fun makes life grand.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Y’know, @KatetheGreat , I’ve mostly been against the whole gun thing, but you and and Fiddle and Dan and my BIL all make it sound like so much fun that I think I might have to rethink my feelings on that! :-)

Blondesjon's avatar

@JilltheTooth . . . Firing a gun is very empowering in and of itself.

It’s the choice of target that takes you in to the realm of for/against.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Yeah, I think they still regret letting me vote and drive a car. I doubt they’ll let me handle a firearm.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@JilltheTooth It is absolutely fantastic! I definitely recommend trying it at least once.

MacBatman31's avatar

Rugby, beer, chatting with my close friends who support me even when they don’t understand the situation, and more beer or rugby. One of the two.

Blondesjon's avatar

@MacBatman31 . . . Lurve for beer. Is there anything that fine beverage can’t do?

linguaphile's avatar

Find me some St. Bernardus’ and we’ll be friends.

MacBatman31's avatar

@Blondesjon I’m thinking, and you are going to have to wait a long time, because I can’t think of anything.
