Has anyone had a chance to view The Perseid meteor shower this year?

Asked by jonsblond (44316points) August 13th, 2011

I’m lucky to live in a very rural area, so the full moon didn’t ruin our view last night. The clouds did tonight though. :/

I did keep my daughter up late last night so she could view the shower. It was her first. We were lucky to see several meteors. The look on her face was priceless!

Anyone else have any luck?

Nope, I tried for a few minutes, but then….somehow…I ended up flirting with women….wtf?

Nope. Just went outside to check if I could see any but it’s so humid outside my glasses fogged up completely, I tripped over a chair, and I decided to just call it a night.

It’s really cloudy around here tonight anyway though. Too bad because I’ve been looking forward to it!

@jonsblond I woke up about 40 minutes ago, at around 3:30 CT and it was like dusk outside. I thought my lightw were on out there. I tried to look out every window to see if the moon was full, or if tere were cars or trucks nearby lighting up the area. I guess from what you wrote it was the moon.

I haven’t watched for the meteors, but would like to. Does it happen tonight? What is the best time to watch for it?

It has been too cloudy, unfortunately. I try to watch every year, but not much luck this year. I did see one, faint shooting star tonight.. so I’m content.

Too cloudy here the last couple of weeks, unfortunately.
So no shooting stars for me…..
But the smile on your daughters face is nice too!

Even a full moon didn’t keep me from seeing a whole bunch through the sky light while I sat in the dark in my bathtub. Tonight it will be hammock time with lots of bug spray.

Why do I have @Cruiser pictured in the old claw foot tubs on the beach with his wife in the other one a la the Cialus commercials?

I forgot about them. Thanks for the reminder. I’ll try to see them tonight although I think it’s supposed to be cloudy.

The full moon makes it hard to get a good view.

I read that late Friday night was the best night to view the shower. Does anyone know if we still have a chance for this evening (Saturday)?

@Cruiser How nice! The first meteor I saw was late Wednesday evening. I was sitting in the living room and happened to see it when I looked out the window. A bathtub would be heaven.

I wanted to, but I’m too sick right now to stay up late outside in the cold. Damn! FYI, I read the peak is today, but I don’t know if the article meant after 12am this morning, or before 12am tonight. It just said August 13.

I love meteor showers. Last year during the Perseids I saw the brightest, most beautiful meteor I’ve ever seen; it was fantastic.
