What exactly does the painting style Depressionism consists of?

Asked by rebbel (35553points) August 13th, 2011

Obviously that is a made up painting style, but I want to ask you what it could consist of, had it be an existing style.
What technique would be used?
What subjects could star?
Which colors would be used mainly?

I guess I’m too literal, because reading the subject I instantly thought of a canvas with a bunch of dents in it.

Not too literal for me…, I think I could imagine that, @ANef_is_Enuf .

From what I understand, it’s suppose to show the artist’s view on how society has failed, somewhat of a combination between symbolism and expressionism.

Sounds like something Van Gogh would have created.

It sounds like a Caravaggio painting and other Baroque artwork.

This is fictional, right? I immediately think of the Great Depression in the United States. That conjures an image of realism, artists such as the Ashcan school in New York, Robert Henri and the like. The subjects would be urban in this case.

Edward Hopper also comes to mind.

But it also makes me think of WPA artists such as this:

They immortalized small town life and farm subjects. I really love Thomas Hart Benton.

The colors would be complex, not too many primary colors, much more muted.

Oh whoops, I didn’t realize you were making it up since the French actually kind of started it and I just gave the (more or less) definition of their style.

You have your own interpretation of something, your impression. But you are sad and pessimistic. Maybe Depressed. Depressionism.
