They are lifesavers when living paycheck to paycheck, it’s the day before payday and you need a roll of toilet paper.

I really don’t use them. When I do get them, I stock pile them in a jar.
They do come in handy when the Ice Cream Man comes down the street.

I take all my coins, my change and put them in a jar; a big jar, a five gallon water jug and they just keep adding up. It’s kind of a painless way to save. I should cash them in and put them in an interest bearing account or invest them in something, I have a lot of change in that jar but now I’m determined to fill up the entire jug with quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies so I won’t do that. It’s a mission now and it’s part of my retirement fund.

My mom loved change and I kept some in the car because she would get so excited to “find” change. I leave change int the car still to this day. I too, love change for the memory it gives me.

Canada has $1 and $2 coins. It’s pretty awesome to count up a handful of change and have ten bucks or more.

They seem even more dirty than paper money. Everytime I handle coins, I swear my hands feel sticky. They kinda gross me out. I always love finding wheat pennies though.

KateTheGreat's avatar

Pennies make me angry. They cost more than a cent to make. What kind of logic is that?

john65pennington's avatar

Well, silver is not in the ballpark with gold, but it’s worth more today than ever before.

$56.83 an ounce makes my silver dollars worth a small fortune.

I like coins.

I agree with Kate The Great and dislike pennies. They are a pain in the rear.

Mariah's avatar

I like collecting coins from other countries and old out of print coins, but aside from that I’m pretty apathetic towards them.

Porifera's avatar

Annoying, dirty, heavy…I don’t like them.

lillycoyote's avatar

@john65pennington @KateTheGreat doesn’t just dislike pennies, they make her angry.

I’m with @jonsblond on this one. Coins have helped me a lot when I needed some canned goods until pay day, or when I didn’t have any smokes left. I always got quarters and loonies hanging around, and they’re great for small backup.
I accumulate dimes and nickels like crazy, but eventually, they always get rolled up and traded for bills when I’m hurtin. Even my fishbowl filled with pennies has been drained a time or three.
I denno how many times that forgotten change in old jackets and backpacks have saved my ass, even if just for one more evening lol.

Coins rock.

And to think that some fuckers are sittin up in their ivory towers, with more cash in their account than I’d ever see even if I was immortal…

I like the ones that have a hole in the middle of them and 6 straight sides….. and the teeny ones no bigger than your little finger nail.

I can tell you when I was on furlough from my job a year ago, I enjoyed the privilege to raid banks for their silver coins. I gathered quite a few, amazing how many I got before people got wind to it. Impossible now, however with the prices.

We have two ‘dump’ spots in our house for coins, an old mason jar in the kitchen (conveniently near the laundry room, where I frequently find change in my husband’s pants) and a ceramic stein upstairs on our bedroom dresser (where he usually remembers to empty his pockets.) I also dump mine when I accumulate too many in my wallet, leaving just the minimum I might need in there. Every 6 months or so, I take it all to the bank, have them put it in the coin counter, and deposit almost $200.00 bucks. As someone else said, painless way to save.

I like them. They always seem like real money to me. I still miss silver coins that were really silver (and had beautiful designs, too). But even now they seem to have some inherent value, unlike the paper, which is worth something only by common consent and government decree.

They’ll also hold up longer in some museum of the future. I think it is fascinating to see an ancient Greek or Roman coin in a display case and understand that somebody was spending that very piece in the market when Alexander the Great’s father was king of Macedonia.

The loose change in coat pockets and the bottoms of old purses has saved me more than once when I was broke.

I think a brand new, shiny, uncirculated copper penny is beautiful.

jonsblond's avatar

@Symbeline yeah, Jon was just laid off this week. It’ll be one of those weeks we’ll be happy we saved some coins.

Jeruba's avatar

Oh, no! I’m sorry, @jonsblond. I have not forgotten what that feels like.

Berserker's avatar

@jonsblond That sucks. I hope you guys work it all out fine, at least, soon enough.

jonsblond's avatar

@Jeruba and @Symbeline An easy life is boring, right? Must think positive! ;)

Berserker's avatar

Yall just do what you gotta do to. I’ll send positive witchcraft your way. :)

augustlan's avatar

@jonsblond My husband is laid off, too. I’m sorry you guys are going through that. :(

Bellatrix's avatar

I am so sorry @jonsblond. I remember how excited you were when Jon got his new job. You guys are having a tough time. Wishing you luck and a new job on the horizon very soon I hope.

And I like coins. I have a little change purse at work I put my coins in so I can go for a coffee at the coffee shop.

I know that I love pre-1966 quarters, Morgan Dollars, South African Krugerrands, and Walking Liberty half dollars.

Ka-ching, ka-ching!

trailsillustrated's avatar

I am really broke right now, so I was hoping it was a susan b anthony but it was an ozzie dollar. made all the difference there and then. pooopey and that’s my sentiment

ucme's avatar

I feel them in my pocket silly ;¬}

OpryLeigh's avatar

I love finding coins on the floor, even if they are only a penny. Like @jonsblond said, they can be a lifesaver when there’s too much month and not enough paycheck.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Anyone who do not like coins, you can send them to me. Anything over 5lb I will pay for the postage.

Sunny2's avatar

“Find a penny, pick it up. All the day you’ll have good luck.” or lup, if you want it really to rhyme.

jonsblond's avatar

I’m curious how much money charities bring in because of coins. Sometimes that’s the only time I give to charity. I’m thinking about Salvation Army at Christmas time or St. Jude jars at grocery stores. There’s a jar at our local Dollar General, and every time someone pays with cash the cashiers ask the customers if they would like to donate their change to the charity. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone turn down the offer.

Jeruba's avatar

So, then @lloydbird, how do you feel about them?

Garebo's avatar

@Jeruba check out the history of the Peace dollar that I have been hoarding.
If memory serves me right, it was made after the Treasury dudes wife, caused quite a stir. Gee, looking at your monikor, it could have been you!

Jeruba's avatar

@Garebo, if you mean my avatar (a moniker is a name), that’s not a picture of me. That’s Cate Blanchett, the actress. I’ve just doctored the image a little bit. The original looks like this (which is out there on a number of sites).

The image on the Peace dollar is beautiful. So is the one on the Mercury dime. I wish we still put that kind of artistry into our coins.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Holy smokes! An avartar spoofer….....and I thought I was the only one…..I can come out of the closet!

lillycoyote's avatar

@jonsblond UNICEF has collected over 103 million dollars in their Change for Good campaign since 1987. It adds up

jonsblond's avatar

@lillycoyote Wow! That’s great to hear. Thanks for the info.

Sorry for the hit-and-run question guys. Real world intruding into my time again!
Lots of very good responses from many of you.
As for myself (And my thanks to you for asking @Jeruba), I have a long standing love of and fascination with coins. My father was widely traveled with his work and would usually return with coins from whichever destination he had been to. As a boy, I loved these bits of far away places. They would be mixed in with the old local coinage that I acquired from grandparents and aged family members. I can’t tell you how many times I looked through my fifty-sixty old pennies to see if I could find a 1933 Penny, then worth £600!
But it’s not just about the value, or potential value. It is also about the durability, history and sheer beauty of coins.

Anyway, I’m just off to check my pennies. You never know.

Does anyone remember Owen’s coin collection in Throw Momma from the Train?

Garebo's avatar
