Who is the best blues guitarist?

Asked by pezz (1291points) August 14th, 2011

Just been listening to Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s new CD and although it is very good, I don’t think that it deserves all the praise that it’s getting on Amazon. So it set me wondering who is the best blues/rock guitarist?

Stevie Ray Vaughn took blues rock to a level only a few can imitate and Kenny Wayne is a good example of that.

I’ve got to third the Stevie Ray Vaughn nomination.

I think I would have to say B.B. King.

Buddy Guy was another great.

It’s really hard to come up with a “best” since the blues has expanded into a pretty broad genre, and some of the attributes that define “best” are very subjective and have little to do with technical prowess or for that matter anything else quantifiable.

So… that being said, I really like listening to the old school blues players that influenced people like Steve Ray Vaughn.

Robert Johnson
Lightnin Hopkins – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightnin'_Hopkins
Snooks Eaglin
Blind Lemon Jefferson

@YoBob Now we’re getting there… While I agree with the SRV vote, there’s still a lot of great players out there… Robert Cray can bend the odd string, JJ Cale can blow me away with his coolness, Albert Cummings can thump it out… and what about Walter Trout? I trying to find the real guitarists away from the normal suspects…

Mississippi John Hurt is pretty cool too.

Son House.

Al Di Meola and Carlos Santana are the best I’ve ever seen up close and personal. They make it look so effortless.

Love SRV and his brother Jimmie Vaughn. Eric Clapton has to be mentioned.
Clapton is a fan of Sonny Landret .

Marinelife Buddy Guy is not only still alive and kicking but performing as well.

I saw him in Englewood NJ about 6 years ago. It was so great! He came up in the audience all the way up to the balcony where my husband and I were sitting, guitar in hand. He was standing 6 feet away from us! The guy sitting next to us was so funny. He kept yelling out “buddddyyy guuuyy! That’s what we came here for Buddy!!” My husband and I still say that to each other at a good concert. “that’s what we cammme here forrrr!!!!” Gotta love Buddy.
