How did the heart symbol become the heart symbol?

Asked by King_Pariah (11484points) August 14th, 2011

Okay, so this ”<3” became the symbol representing a heart and thus love and so on and so forth…

IT DOESN“T EVEN LOOK LIKE A HEART!!!! How did we choose this to represent the heart?

In European traditional art and folklore, the heart symbol is drawn in a stylized shape. This shape is typically coloured red, suggesting both blood and, in many cultures, passion and strong emotion. The hearts have constituted, since the 15th century, one of the red suits in most playing card decks. The shape is particularly associated with romantic love; it is often seen on St. Valentine’s Day cards, candy boxes, and similar popular culture artifacts as a symbol of romantic love.

What the traditional “heart shape” actually depicts is a matter of some controversy. It only vaguely resembles the human heart.

The seed of the silphium plant, used in ancient times as an herbal contraceptive,[4] has been suggested as the source of the heart symbol.

The heart symbol could also be considered to depict features of the human female body, such as the female’s buttocks, pubic mound, or spread vulva. The tantric symbol of the “Yoni” is another example of a heart-shaped abstraction of a woman’s vulva.

The heart symbol could also be derived from the shape made by swans necks in a courting ritual, which resembles the heart shape. (Which would be my guess.)

From wiki and others.

PBS says it was there in prehistoric times, and just sort of stuck around. You know, like how some really bad tv shows seem to go on and on and on, and you don’t understand how they’re never canceled, but damned if they just won’t quit. There’s also some good info (shockingly) on Yahoo! Answers (last 2 answers). I’m actually having a hard time coming up with anything scholarly save for this journal article turned website.

The overall shape looks like the Valentine Heart if you view it sideways,

@Hypocrisy_Central that’s the thing, the valentines heart doesn’t really loo like a heart.
