If time travel were possible how would we get back to a specific place?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) August 14th, 2011

Somehow we get around the laws of physics and can travel back in time.

How would we pick a particular destination locale? I can see how we could shoot ourselves back to a certain time, but what about the landing?

Is this swallowing a house and straining at a gnat?

I hope when we could time travel we can build a TARDIS to do all the work for us.

All time travelers would be issued a pair of these with their uniform.

Time IS space.

We already are travelling through time and we don’t have any trouble with location.

Yes I wonder, if we could travel back in time, it would be an issue if we travelled back while staying in the same spacial location. More likely than not, the earth would be in another location at the new time.

I’m guessing the universe will always put up some barrier that will prevent wanna-be time travelers from even being able to attempt to create contradictions (i.e. going back and killing your father before you were conceived and things of that nature). Violent stuff like event horizons and infinite blueshifts or something more subtle like shifting them over into a whole other universe.

You can never go back in time farther than the machine you built to travel through time. So if someone was going to travel back in time he must have the machine here that will allow him to come back. That is why no one has come back to say “Hey I just traveled back in time.” So it’s fairly obvious no one has built a time machine yet.
