What's a good place for a family lunch in NYC?
We’re taking the kids (ages 6–12) to NYC for the day later this week. Our plan is to first visit the American Museum of Natural History, have lunch, visit the Lego store (Rockefeller Center), and basically just wander around to see the sights before taking the train home again.
We don’t usually take the kids to the city, so we’re not sure where we should have lunch with them. Someone suggested Mars 2112 as fun for kids but said the food wasn’t that great. What are some other lunch spots that wouldn’t be out of the way for us (or cost an arm and a leg)? We have one picky eater, one with normal kid tastes, and one that will eat just about anything.

There is a Shake Shack near AMNH if you can brave the lines, that’s all I can think off the top of my head, but there are loads of nice little places.
And I agree with JLes on pizza, buy some and take it to a park, there is bound to be one near by. v
You want a sit down served lunch? Or, just a quick thing like pizza? I would think pizza is good for all the people in the family, quick and easy, and classic NYC. But the environment in a pizza joint will be very busy, hustle bustle, most likely.
Carnegie, or Stage (my husband prefers Stage) will give you a real NY experience, but they will want you to order fas and not dilly dally. If your kids have a hard time deciding what they want (I guess you could look up the menu ahead of time) or eat very very slowly, the waiter might get frustrated if it is right smack during lunch time rush. Also, the sandwiches are huge, they might have a sharing fee, unless they actually have a childrens menu? Which I would not have noticed possibly. The pastrami is very yummy though topped of aith a Dr. Brown’s cream soda. Yum! Again, hustle bustle.
I bet the kids would love M&M World and I’m sure you could find something to eat there! ;-)
@Simone_De_Beauvoir Oh, if we had more time than just one day we’d certainly visit Brooklyn! My husband lived there for a few months a couple of years ago while working on a 12-story mural. Great place, but probably too out of the way for lunch. :( Some time when it’s just the two of us coming up that way, I’ll let you know!
@JilltheTooth Great idea! We’ll just sit in a different part of the train from the kids on the ride home! I’m sure the other passengers won’t mind!
@everyone : Thanks for the suggestions so far!
If the weather is nice, you can take hotdogs from a cart (or whatever you like) into Central Park for a picnic. The south end is directly between Rockefeller Center and the museum,
