Any good tips for trying to lose 30 lbs by December?

Asked by amazingme (1860points) August 15th, 2011

I am going to join the Army after I complete my first semester of college. First, I have to lose 30 lbs though. So, have any fitness or food tips for loosing the weight? Thanks!

There is one and only one way to loose weight. Calories in must be less than calories out.

In order to loose 1 pound per week you must take in 500 less calories than you burn each day.

Use lunchen size plates for your meals (rather than dinner plates). You will feel fuller after eating.

Avoid simple carbohydrates (potatoes, white rice, pasta, corn).

Eat lots of vegetables and fruits.

This is what is working for me:

To eat: Yogghurt for brekfast, and a piece of fruit for the mid-day snack. Then a good solid meal around 2 or 3 in the afternoon. Something low on fat and oil, and high in vitamins and nutrients. e.g. baked chicken breast in garlic with some steamed vegetables on the side. or perhaps some grilled fish and salad, then for pudding some fruit. In the evening have a plate of salad, and any time you feel the need to snack reach for the fruit. You can allow your self some chocolate, or even a full ice cream sunday, almost on a daily basis even, just avoid things like bread, cereal, or any of the bread-like foods.

Exercise: Take the stairs, leave 10 minutes early and walk, generally be more active in your day to day routine, and find at least 40 minutes a day to work out. I go to the gym, but you don’t have to. You could do 2 sets of 20 minutes at different times of the day. 10–20 situps before and after sleep, things like that.

Finally, avoid sitting around too long during the day. Going to the gym is all well and good, but if you sit on ass all day, going to the gym will just simulate living a normal life. You need to burn the calories of a normal life, plus the ones at the gym/homeworkout.

Consume fewer calories, exercise more.

I would focus more on improving your level of physical fitness than trying to lose X amount of pounds.

My experience is that when I REALLY want something I will go after it and won’t stop. Many times I have had to recognize that MOTIVATION is the only thing that stops me from what I say I want to achieve. You go girl, YOU CAN DO IT. Amaze yourself!

Food: Vegetables, nuts, fruit, complex carbohydrates , lowfat dairy, lean protein. Do not undereat.

Exercise: If it’s not something that you’ve done regularly, you may want to start small and work your way up. I started with walking outside, increasing my time and distance over time. Then I bought a treadmill and stuck with that for quite a while. Don’t ask about the last year, though, please! Make sure to do a combination of aerobic and muscle-building exercise. Muscle takes up less room than fat, so don’t be annoyed if your clothes fit better but the scale isn’t moving down rapidly. Check your tape measure along with your scale. As well, muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does, so having some more muscle will help you to burn more calories.

Don’t buy into diet pills, colonics or fads. You might lose temporarily, but it often comes back.

You have 2 weeks left in August and 12 weeks in Sept through Nov.

If you lost 2 lbs a week that would be 28 lbs an is EASY!

Go to Loseit.com set up an account, follow the easy rules and I GUARANTEE you will meet your goal if you are generally healthy.

This is with NO exercise!!!! If you do exercise it will be even easier.

I’ve done it, an I know quite a few people who have done it and been successful!

Read no more. Go to Loseit (“Lose It”) play by the rules, and enjoy your new bod.

Do P90X. You will lose weight and build muscle. By the time you get to basic, you will be in fabulous shape. They are going to work you to death anyway. Why not get a head start.

You aBsolutely must find some type of exercise you like otherwise you won’t do it.

If you have a blackberry, iphone or any other smart phone, I really recommend downloading some sort of free calorie counter software. I really recommend http://www.myfitnesspal.com as you can put in your goals (e.g. 30lb by december) and then it will tell you how many calories you should be eating each day to achieve said goal. You can even add in the exercise you’ve done and it will add negative calories. It’s good in the fact that it’s easier to stick to a diet and it really motivates you as you don’t want the counter to become red at the end of each day.

Eat at least 5 cups of vegetables a day, (No butter or sauce.) also 1–2 fruits. Limit your fat and carb intake, use non fat dairy, and small lean protein portions (not fried and about the size of a deck of playing cards.)
Join a boot camp fitness boot-camp in your area.
You can also get a lot of help and diet plans from sparkpeople.com. It’s free and you can find a community of people to help support you, along with calorie counting food journals, recipes, and weight and fitness trackers.
Good luck. I lost a lot of weight 7 years ago and had recently put a few more back on. I’m in the final stretch back to my goal. Only 3 lbs away as of this morning!!

Lots of cardio and less calorie intake.

I was once 150 and lost 20 pounds to now be at 130 and I did that in 3 months. It’s very doable. All I did was run/use the elliptical for 30–45 minutes 3 times a week. I did it often as the first thing in the morning with no food in my stomach. This way, my body immediately burned the fat rather than resorting to food in the stomach as energy. Of course, be careful. You need to stretch plenty and drink lots of water. Also, take a vitamin and never over do it. Just take it nice n slow and let your heart rate rise to a comfortable pace, enough to make you breath hard and sweat, but not too much to make you gasp for air and feel like you’re about the faint. I ate a lot of salads and counted my calories too. I ate about 1200 calories a day. I did this with cereal and fat free milk and salads. I had a cheat day once a week and had something fried/sugary. Remember to eat breakfast and make it filling to curb hunger. Also try some yogurt.

I think that’s about it. You can do it!

If you will eat scrambled eggs and cottage cheese for three months, you will see the weight disappear. I did this and it worked. It really gets boring after a while, but be focused and determined and it will happen. The end results will be worth the effort.

Also, include some walking to help shed some pounds. Sweat is good and you want to let go of a lot of it. Keep drinking water and make sure you are physically fit to start trimming down your body.

Good luck. jp

@john65pennington – so are you able to revert to normal, healthy, more varied eating after those 3 months and keep the weight off?

emeraldisles's avatar

Intuitive eating?

tedibear's avatar

@john65pennington – I must ask, did you eat only those things, or were they the main food of each meal?
